Британский музей получил крупнейшее пожертвование в своей истории. Как сообщает вещательная корпорация BBC, фонд, распоряжающийся наследием британского финансиста Персиваля Дэвида (1892-1964), передал музею его уникальную коллекцию китайского фарфора, стоимость которой оценивается в 1 млрд фунтов (свыше $1,25 млрд).
Собрание Дэвида, состоящее из 1 700 предметов, созданных в период с III по XX век н.э., экспонировалось в музее с 2009 года. После официальной передачи коллекции в его собственность она будет временно передана в аренду Шанхайскому музею и Метрополитен-музею в Нью-Йорке.
В собрание Дэвида входит множество образцов императорского фарфора, включая пиалу с изображением курицы, в которой, как считается, подавали вино императору Чжу Цзяньшэню (1447-1487). Сейчас в мире насчитывает всего таких 16 таких пиал, созданных по заказу китайского правителя. Частью коллекции Дэвида также является пара знаменитых храмовых ваз середины XIV века с синей росписью - самых ранних образчиков этого стиля, которые удалось точно датировать благодаря надписи на горлышке.
Благодаря сделанному пожертвованию, собрание китайской керамики Британского музея станет самым крупным за пределами Китая.
