Վիսքոնսին նահանգում քննիչներն օգտագործել են գենետիկ ծագումնաբանության ԴՆԹ թեստը՝ բացահայտելու համար 50-ամյա վաղեմության գործը, երբ 84-ամյա տղամարդը Մինեսոթայից մեղադրվել էր 1974թ. սպանված կնոջ սպանության մեջ, տեղեկացրել է CNN-ը։

Դան օկրուգի շերիֆի տվյալներով՝ 25-ամյա Մերի Շլայսի դին հայտնաբերվել էր Վիսքոնսին նահանգի Սփրինգ Բրուք քաղաքի խաչմերուկում 1974թ. փետրվարի 15-ին։  Նրա մահը որակվել էր որպես սպանություն, եւ նախաքննությունը ցույց էր տվել, որ նա փորձում էր մեքենա կանգնեցնել՝ գնալու համար Չիկագո, գեղարվեստական ցուցահանդեսին, երբ սպանվել է, տեղեկացրել է գործակալությունը։

Ջոն Միլլերը Մինեսոթայի նահանգի Օվաթոն քաղաքից ձերբակալվել է հինգշաբթի, այն բանից հետո, երբ «հաստատել է իր մասնակցությունը Շլայսի սպանությանը, տեղեկացրել է Դան օկրուգի շերիֆ Քեւին Բիգդը։

Ներկայում կասկածյալը կալանքի տալ է Մինեսոթայի նահանգի Սթիլ օկրուգում, եւ սպասում է Վիսքոնսին  արտահանձնվելուն։

Տասնամյակներ շարունակ տարբեր իրավապահ մարմինների դետեկտիվները, որոնց հանձնարարվել էր հետաքննել սպանության գործը, տարբեր վարկածներ են ունեցել եւ զրույցներ վարել, բայց, շերիֆի գրասենյակի տեղեկացմամբ, «իրական» կասկածյալին չեն հայտնաբերել։

ԱՄՆ արդարադատության նախարարության տվյալներով՝ դատագենետիկական ծագումնաբանությունը կարող է լույս սփռել չբացահայտված գործերի վրա՝ վերլուծելով ԴՆԹ-ն՝ ի հավելումն ավանդական ծագումնաբանական հետազոտությունների։
