Սահարա անապատի լճերի ջրալցվածության էպիզոդիկ բարձրացումը, ինչպես Սեբհա-էլ-Մելա լճի դեպքում, 2024 թվականին, հետազոտողներին օգնում է ուսումնասիրել կլիմայական փոփոխությունները:
Ըստ Հիդրոօդերևութաբանության և մոնիթորինգի կենտրոնի հրապարակման, մոտ 11000–5000 տարի առաջ՝ աֆրիկյան խոնավ ժամանակաշրջանում, Սահարա անապատը շատ ավելի խոնավ և կանաչ էր, քան այսօր։
«Երկրաբանական և հնագիտական ապացույցները ցույց են տալիս, որ այն տարածքները, որոնք այժմ հսկայական ավազաթմբեր են, ժամանակին ծածկված են եղել բուսականությամբ, խոնավ տարածքներով և, հնարավոր է, նույնիսկ մեծ լճերով։
2024 թվականի սեպտեմբերին, երբ տրոպիկական ցիկլոնը հորդառատ անձրև բերեց Հյուսիսային Աֆրիկա, կարճ ժամանակով նորից հայտնվեցին ավելի կանաչ Սահարայի ակնարկները: Հորդառատ անձրևները մասամբ լցվեցին անապատի մի քանի, սովորաբար չոր, կարճատև լճեր:
Սահարա անապատում լճի լցվելը հազվագյուտ, հիմնականում ժամանակավոր երևույթ է: Ալժիրի այս հատվածում քիչ են ցամաքային եղանակային կայանները, ուստի հետազոտողները օգտագործել են արբանյակներից ստացված տվյալները:
Արբանյակային դիտարկումները ցույց են տալիս, որ երբ Սեբհա էլ-Մելահը լցվում է, ջուրը երկար ժամանակ պահպանվում է: 2008 թվականին լճի լցվելուց հետո ջուրն ամբողջությամբ չորացել էր միայն 2012 թվականին։
Կլիմայի փոփոխության հարցերով միջկառավարական հանձնաժողովի (IPCC) կանխատեսումները ցույց են տալիս, որ թեև Սահարայի որոշ շրջաններում գլոբալ ջերմաստիճանի բարձրացման հետ մեկտեղ կարող են ավելի շատ տեղումներ դիտվել, մեկ այլ տարածքում ավելի քիչ տեղումներ կլինեն: Թե ինչպես կփոխվի Սահարայի կլիման, մնում է անհասկանալի, սակայն ուսումնասիրելով այս լիճը՝ հետազոտողները հույս ունեն ավելի լավ հասկանալ Սահարայի ապագան»,- հայտնել է կենտրոնը:
