Ավստրալացիները հունվարի 26-ին նշում են իրենց գլխավոր ազգային տոնը՝ Ավստրալիայի օրը: Այն սկիզբ Է առնում 1788 թվականի հունվարին Սիդնեյի ծովախորշ առաջին բրիտանական նավատորմի ժամանմամբ եւ մայր ցամաքի արեւելյան ափի նկատմամբ Մեծ Բրիտանիայի գերիշխանության հռչակմամբ: Այս տարեթիվն սկսել են նշել այդ պատմական իրադարձություններից 30 տարի անց, տեղեկացնում Է «Արմենպրես»-ը:

Ավստրալիան մտնում Է Բրիտնական Համագործակցության կազմի մեջ, եւ ձեւականորեն պետության ղեկավարը Մեծ Բրիտանիայի թագուհին Է:

Տոնի նախօրյակին երկրի գրեթե բոլոր նահանգների եւ տարածքների կառավարությունների ղեկավարները՝ կառավարող Լիբերալ եւ ընդդիմադիր Լեյբորիստական կուսակցությունների ներկայացուցիչները, ստորագրել են վարչապետին հասցեագրված բաց նամակ՝ Սահմանադրությունը փոխելու եւ Ավստրալիան հանրապետության վերածելու հարցի շուրջ հանրաքվե անցկացնելու կոչով: Միակ քաղաքական գործիչը, որն ստորագրությունը չի դրել, եղել Է Արեւմտյան Ավստրալիայի վարչակազմի ղեկավար Քոլին Բառնետը:      

Նա նշել Է, որ հանրապետական հայացքների կողմնակից Է, սակայն հանդես Է գալիս հանրահարցում անցկացնելու դեմ «քանի դեռ թագուհին գահին Է»:

Ավստրալիայի ներկայիս վարչապետ Մալքոլմ Թեռնբուլը  բրիտանական թագից երկրի անկախության գաղափարի վաղեմի կողմնակիցն Է: Սակայն նա պաշտպանել Է Քոլին Բառնետի դիրքորոշումը: «Այժմ նման փոփոխությունների ժամանակը չԷ»,- հայտարարել Է կառավարության ղեկավարը, հաղորդել Է ՏԱՍՍ գործակալությունը:
