Ժամանակակից տեսությունները ենթադրում են, որ մութ նյութը կազմում է ամբողջ տիեզերքի մինչև 85%-ը, սակայն դրա ոչ մի մասնիկ դեռ չի հայտնաբերվել: Սիդնեյի համալսարանի ավստրալացի գիտնականները կարծես թե մի փոքր ավելի են մոտեցել այս առեղծվածային նյութի բացահայտմանը: Ինչպես հայտնում է The Conversation-ը, գիտնականները հայտնել են LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) միջազգային գիտափորձի միջանկյալ արդյունքների մասին, որոնք ուղղված են մութ նյութի մասնիկների որոնման շրջանակը նեղացնելուն։

LZ գիտափորձն արվել է ԱՄՆ Հարավային Դակոտայում գտնվող ոսկու ստորգետնյա նախկին հանքում՝ 1,5 կմ խորության վրա։ Փորձի շրջանակում օգտագործվել է մինչև -98°C սառեցված 7 տոննա հեղուկ քսենոնի ռեզերվուար: Եթե ​​մութ նյութի մասնիկը դիպչի քսենոնային միջուկին, այն կառաջացնի լույսի փոքրիկ փայլ, որը կֆիքսեն լույսի 494 սենսորները։

Փորձի վերջին արդյունքներով չեն գտնվել մութ նյութի ապացույցներ, սակայն դրանք թույլ են տվել բացառել որոնման առարկային չվերաբերող բազմաթիվ տվյալներ, օրինակ՝ 1,6 × 10^-26 կգ-ից ավելի զանգված ունեցող մասնիկներ (10 անգամ ավելի ծանր, քան պրոտոնը):
