Նոր հետազոտության համաձայն, որի արդյունքները հրապարակվել են Neurology ամսագրում Կարոլինայի համալսարանի հետազոտողների կողմից, երիկամների սուր ախտահարումը կապված է եղել դեմենցիայի առաջացման հավանականության հետ։
Երիկամների սուր ախտահարումը, երիկամների ֆունկցիայի հանկարծակի վատացումը համեմատաբար հաճախ է հանդիպում տարեց մարդկանց մոտ եւ կապված է հիվանդության եւ մահացության բարձր մակարդակի հետ։
Նոր հետազոտությունում ուսումնասիրվել է կապը երիկամների սուր ախտահարման եւ դեմենցիայի տարբեր տեսակների միջեւ։ Գիտնականներն ուսումնասիրել են 65-ից բարձր տարիքի ավելի քան 300 000 մարդու տվյալները՝ ստացված Ստոկհոլմի կրեատինինի չափման նախագծից (SCREAM)։
Յուրաքանչյուր չորրորդ մասնակցի մոտ եղել է երիկամների սուր ախտահարման մեկ դրվագ 12 տարվա դիտարկումների ընթացքում, իսկ 16 տոկոսի մոտ ախտորոշվել է դեմենցիա։ Նրանց մոտ, ովքեր երիկամների սուր ախտահարում են ունեցել, 49 տոկոսով բարձր է եղել դեմենցիայի ցանկացած տեսակի առաջացման հավանականությունը։ Երբ դեմենցիայի յուրաքանչյուր տեսակն առանձին է ուսումնասիրվել, բարձրացման ռիսկը կազմել է 88 տոկոս Լեւիի մարմինների կամ դեմենցիայի համար, որը պայմանավորված է եղել Պարկինսոնի հիվանդությամբ, 47 տոկոսով՝ անոթային դեմենցիայի եւ 31 տոկոսով՝ Ալցհեյմերի հիվանդության համար։
Ռիսկն ավելի բարձր է եղել երիկամների ծանր ախտահարում ունեցող մարդկանց մոտ, որոնք հոսպիտալացման կամ ստացիոնար բուժման կարիք են ունեցել
