Ս. Մակաբայեցիների` Եղիազար քահանայի, Շամունայի և նրա յոթ որդիների հիշատակության օրն է այսօր

Հին կտակարանի այս սրբերի նահատակության մասին պատմվում է Մակաբայեցիների երկրորդ գրքի 6-րդ և 7-րդ գլուխներում: Ն. Ք. 2-րդ դարում Հրեաստանը գտնվում էր Սելևկյան իշխանապետության ներքո: Վիճակն ավելի է սրվում Անտիոքոս Եպիփանի թագավորության օրոք: Նա հրահանգում է, որ իր իշխանության ներքո գտնվող բոլոր ազգերն ընդունեն հունական մշակույթն ու պաշտեն հունական աստվածներին: Սակայն Մատաթիա անունով մի քահանա իր որդիների ու եղբայրների հետ միասին ապստամբում է այս որոշման դեմ` հավատարիմ մնալով Աստծո Օրենքին և Ուխտին: Վերջինիս որդիներից էր Հուդան, ով իր քաջագործությունների շնորհիվ ստացավ Մակաբեոս հունական անունը, որ նշանակում է մրճահար, հարվածահար: Հետագայում նրանց ընտանիքին անվանեցին Մակաբայեցիներ:
Եղիազար քահանան Մատաթիայի որդին էր` քաջ, աստվածավախ և իմաստությամբ լի: Վերջինիս բերանին գելոց են դնում և ստիպում խոզի միս ուտել, որն արգելված էր ըստ հրեական օրենքի: Քանի որ նա մանկուց դաստիարակվել էր աստվածային պատվիրաններով ու օրենքներով, մերժում է այդ առաջարկը` գերադասելով արիաբար մեռնել և բարի անուն թողնել, քան պախարակվել իր ընկերներից ու հարազատներից: Երկար կտտանքներ կրելուց հետո սուրբն ավանդում է իր հոգին` հետագա սերունդների համար դառնալով քաջության և ներշնչանքի աղբյուր:
Նույն այս շրջանին է պատկանում մի քաջասիրտ մոր ու նրա յոթ զավակների նահատակությունը: Նրանց էլ Եղիազար քահանայի նման պարտադրում են խոզի միս ուտել, սակայն Շամունան և իր յոթ որդիները հավատարիմ են մնում իրենց հայրերի հավատին` արժանանալով կենաց անթառամ պսակին:
