Գնչուները թափառական կենսակերպ վարող, աշխարհով մեկ սփռված ժողովուրդ են։ Ծագումով նրանք կապված են Հնդկաստանի նոր ժողովուրդների հետ։ Տարբեր երկրներում գնչուներին տարբեր կերպ են անվանում. Հնդկաստանում՝ լոխարներ, նատեր, Միջին Ասիայում՝ լյուլիներ, մազանգներ, ջուղիներ, Իրանում՝ ղարաչիներ, Թուրքիայում՝ չինգենեներ, մյութրուբներ, Ռուսաստանում և առհասարակ Եվրոպայում՝ ցիգաններ և այլն։

Այս մարդիկ խախտում են կայուն կյանքի պատասխանատվություններն ու ավանդույթները հանուն բաց ճանապարհի՝ թույլ տալով հին արմատավորված ավանդույթների ու նորաթուխ տեխնոլոգիաների բախումը։

Բոհեմյան այս ճամփորդները ոգեշնչանքի աղբյուր են դարձել Իեյն Մկքելի լուսանկարչական ճամփորդության համար, որն ուսումնասիրում է ժամանակակից ճամփորդների ֆիզիկական ու էմոցիոնալ ճանապարհը։ Սովորական վավերագրական կադրերի փոխարեն Մկքելը երազային լուսանկարներ է ստեղծում, որոնք գրեթե նորաձևության ոճի լուսանկարներ են հիշեցնում և միաժամանակ առարկայի ու դիտողի միջև տարօրինակ մարդկային կապ ստեղծում։

Մկքելը հարցազրույցներից մեկի ժամանակ բացատրել է իր լուսանկարչական նախագծի նպատակը.

...բարձրացնելու համար այն հարցը, թե ինչպես ենք մենք ընդունում ճանապարհորդներին ու վերաուսումնասիրելու մեր գոյությունը։ Մենք բոլորս բնությանն են տենչում մեր ներսում և ձգտում ազատությանը։ Նախագծի շարժիչ ուժն այն զգացումն է, որ ապրելու այլ ձև կարող է լինել, իսկ նպատակը՝ հարցականի տակ դնել այն ստանդարտները, որոնք մենք ներդնում ենք լիարժեք կյանք ստեղծելու համար։
