Մի անգամ մի ընկերության ղեկավար ժողովի ժամանակ կոպտորեն դիտողություն արեց իր ենթականերից մեկին։ Աշխատակիցը լռեց, բայց հայացքով հոշոտում էր իր վերադասին։ Բոլոր ներկաներն ականատես եղան, թե ինչպես մի քանի րոպեից ղեկավարն ընկավ ու ընկնելիս գլուխը հարվածեց սեղանին։ Րոպեներ անց ժամանած շտապօգնությունն արձանագրեց նրա մահը միայն...
Դատաբժշկի կողմից իրականացված դիահերձման արդյունքներով ոչ մի կերպ հնարավոր չէր բացատրել, թե ինչը կարող էր ստիպել միանգամայն առողջ սրտին կանգ առնել առանց որևէ պատճառի։ Ոստիկանության հետաքննությունը ոչինչ չտվեց, ու գործը մտավ փակուղի։ Բոլոր գիտնականներն ու մասնագետները միաբերան պնդում էին, որ «սպանիչ հայացք» ասվածը գիտության համար անհայտ ու ֆանտաստիկայի ժանրին հարիր բան է։
Բայց արի ու տես, որ պատմության մեջ քիչ չեն հիշատակումներն այն դեպքերի մասին, երբ մարդկանց մահը կապված է եղել հենց մահացու հայացքի հետ։ Թերթերից մեկում նկարագրվում է այդպիսի մի ուշագրավ դեպք. կանադացի Սթիվ Մակ Կելլենը մի անգամ որսի է գնում, որի ժամանակ ենթարկվում է գրիզլի արջի հարձակման։ Այն պահին, երբ տղամարդն ընկած էր գետնին ու բնազդաբար փորձում էր պաշտպանել երեսն ու կոկորդը արջից, նա մի պահ առաջ պարզեց ձեռքում սեղմած դանակն, ու նրա հայացքը խաչվեց կենդանու հայացքին։ Այն, ինչ կատարվեց հետո, անհավանական է. վայրի կենդանին տեղում քարացավ։ Թեև տղամարդը գիտեր, որ ոչ մի դեպքում դա չի կարելի անել, նա շարունակեց ապշահար նայել ուղիղ գազանի աչքերի մեջ։ Ու ի՞նչ եք կարծում՝ ինչ եղավ... Կենդանին անշնչացած տապալվեց տասնյակ արնահոսող վերքերով ծածկված տղամարդու կողքին։ Մանրազնին ուսումնասիրության արդյունքում պարզվեց, որ արջի մարմնի վրա ոչ մի վնասվածք չկա, և միակ ողջամիտ բացատրությունը որսորդի աչքերից արձակված բիոէներգետիկ իմպուլսն էր, որով նա քայքայել էր կենդանու ուղեղի նյարդային բջիջները։
Որոշ գիտնականներ համոզված են, որ դրանում անհնար ոչինչ չկա։ Դարեր շարունակ համարվել է, որ ամենաեզրին գտնվող մարդու հայացքն օժտված է անասելի ուժով, որը կարող է վնաս պատճառել ցանկացած մեկի, ով իրենից անմիջական վտանգ է ներկայացնում։ Հենց դրա համար էլ արդեն երկար ժամանակ է, ինչ մահապատժի ենթարկելուց առաջ մարդկանց աչքերը կապում են, որպեսզի չեզոքացնեն մահացու հայացք ստանալու ռիսկը։
