Այսօր հայ կինոյի օրն է։
«Մեկ դարից ավելի է ազգային կինոն արձանագրում, գեղարվեստական ու պատկերային հիշողության է վերածում մեր երկրի ու ժողովրդի պատմությունը, հոգևոր արժեքներն ու մարդկային ճակատագրերը։ Եվ հարյուրամյակից ավելի ձգվող այդ գեղարվեստական տարեգրությունը մեր մշակույթին տվել է մեծ անուններ, մեծ կինո և ազգային տեսակի հրաշալի պատմություններ»,- նշում են Հայաստանի Ազգային կինոկենտրոնից։
Հայաստանի ազգային կինոկենտրոնի նախաձեռնությամբ «Հայ կինոյի օրվա» առիթով այսօր կցուցադրվեն հայկական հին ու նոր` անիմացիոն ու խաղարկային ֆիլմեր՝ նշանավորելով ՀԱՅ ԿԻՆՈՅԻ ծնունդը:

2019 թվականին ՀՀ Ազգային ժողովը հունիսի 19-ի նիստում ընդունել է ապրիլի 16-ը «Հայ կինոյի օր» սահմանելու մասին օրենքի նախագիծը և «ՀՀ տոների և հիշատակի օրերի մասին» օրենքը լրացվել է 4․1-րդ հոդվածով՝ «Հայ կինոյի օր` նշվում է ապրիլի 16-ին»:
Խորհրդային Հայաստանի կառավարության 1923 թվականի ապրիլի 16-ի «Պետկինոյի կազմակերպման մասին» դեկրետով ստեղծվել է «Պետկինոն», որն ընդամենը երկու տարի անց՝ 1925 թվականին, «Նաիրի» կինոթատրոնի հանդիսավոր բացմանը հանդիսատեսին ներկայացրել է առաջին լիամետրաժ վավերագրական ֆիլմը՝ «Խորհրդային Հայաստան»։ Մեկ տարի անց արդեն հայ կինոն ունեցել է նաև իր առաջին լիամետրաժ համր ֆիլմը․ էկրան է բարձրացել Համո Բեկնազարյանի «Նամուսը»։
