Այսօր Սպարապետ, երջանկահիշատակ Վազգեն Սարգսյանի ծննդյան օրն Է։ Սպարապետը կդառնար 65 տարեկան։ Վազգեն Սարգսյանը ծնվել է 1959 թվականի մարտի 5-ին ՀԽՍՀ Արարատի շրջանի (ներկայումս՝ ՀՀ Արարատի մարզ) Արարատ գյուղում։
1976 թ.-ին ընդունվել է և 1979 թ.-ին ավարտել է Ֆիզիկական կուլտուրայի հայկական պետական ինստիտուտը։
1979-1983 թվականներին աշխատել է ֆիզկուլտուրայի ուսուցիչ հայրենի Արարատ գյուղի միջնակարգ դպրոցում։
1983-1986 թվականներին եղել է Արարատի ցեմենտի գործարանի՝ կոմունիստական երկիտասարդական միության (կոմսոմոլ) քարտուղարը։
1985 թ. դարձել է Հայաստանի Գրողների միության անդամ։ Նրա առաջին պատմվածքը լույս է տեսել «Գարուն» ամսագրում՝ «Վերջը» վերնագրով։
1990-1995 թթ.-ին ընտրվել է Հայաստանի Գերագույն խորհրդի պատգամավոր, որի ընթացքում՝ 1990-1992 թթ.-ին հանդիսացել է Գերագույն խորհրդի պաշտպանության և ներքին գործերի մշտական հանձնաժողովի նախագահ
1991-1992 թթ.-ին ՀՀ պաշտպանության նախարար, 1992-1993 թթ.-ին ՀՀ նախագահի խորհրդական պաշտպանության հարցերի գծով,
ՀՀ սահմանամերձ գոտիներում ՀՀ նախագահի հատուկ ներկայացուցիչ, 1993-1995 թթ.-ին ՀՀ պաշտպանության, ազգային անվտանգության և ներքին գործերի գծով պետնախարար։ 1995 թ.-ին կրկին նշանակվել է ՀՀ պաշտպանության նախարար, իսկ 1999 թ.-ին դարձել ՀՀ վարչապետ։
1999 թ.-ի հոկտեմբերի 27-ին Հայաստանի Հանրապետության Ազգային ժողովի նիստերի դահլիճը, որտեղ ընթանում էր ԱԺ նիստ, հարձակման է ենթարկվում 5 զինված անձանց կողմից, որի հետևանքով այլ պետական պաշտոնյաների թվում սպանվում է Վազգեն Սարգսյանը։
