ՆԱՏՕ-ի գլխավոր քարտուղար Յենս Ստոլտենբերգը վստահեցրել է, որ Հյուսիսատլանտյան դաշինքի անդամ երկրներից որևէ մեկի վրա հարձակման դեպքում միացյալ ռազմական բլոկը կգա նրան պաշտպանելու։ Այսպիսով, նա քննադատել է հայտարարությունները, որոնք կասկածի տակ են դնում այս աքսիոմը, սակայն ուղղակիորեն չի հիշատակել Դոնալդ Թրամփին, ով վերջերս իրեն թույլ տվեց նման հայտարարություններ։ Ստոլտենբերգի խոսքերը մեջբերում են մի շարք լրատվամիջոցներ, այդ թվում՝ The Guardian-ը։

«ՆԱՏՕ-ի վրա ցանկացած հարձակում կհանգեցնի միասնական և վճռական պատասխանի: Ցանկացած վարկած, որ դաշնակիցները միմյանց չեն պաշտպանի, խաթարում է մեր ընդհանուր անվտանգությունը՝ ներառյալ Միացյալ Նահանգներինը, և մեծ վտանգի տակ է դնում ամերիկացի և եվրոպացի զինվորներին»,- ասել է նա:
Ստոլտենբերգը նշել է, որ ակնկալում է՝ ԱՄՆ-ն «կմնա ՆԱՏՕ-ի ուժեղ և հավատարիմ դաշնակիցը»՝ անկախ նրանից, թե ով կհաղթի երկրի նախագահական ընտրություններում։
