Ադրբեջանում այսօր նախագահական ընտրություններ են։ Դեկտեմբերի 7-ին Իլհամ Ալիևը հրամանագիր ստորագրեց երկրում համընդհանուր արտահերթ նախագահական ընտրություններ անցկացնելու համար։ Ի սկզբանե հայտեր ներկայացրած 17 թեկնածուներից ընտրություններին թողեցին 7-ին, և Ալիևի 6 մրցակիցները, ինչպես ի սկզբանե պարզ էր, առաջադրվել էին մրցակցության պատրանք ստեղծելու համար։
Ընդդիմադիր հիմնական քաղաքական ուժերը չեն մասնակցում, հայտարարելով, որ ընտրությունների ելքը կանխորոշված է, իսկ խախտումները կանխելը հնարավոր չէ։ Ադրբեջանական իշխանություններն իրենք էլ թույլ չեն տվել Եվրամիության և անկախ դիտորդական կազմակերպությունների մասնակցությունն ընտրություններին, փոխարենը խավիարային դիվանագիտության շրջանակներում Եվրոպայից մեծ քանակով եվրապատգամավորներ և այլ կաշառված անձանց են հրավիրել, իբր ընտրությունները վերահսկելու, սակայն արդյունքում իրենց ցանկալի եզրակացություններ տալու նպատակով։
Իլհամ Ալիևի մրցակիցները նաև քարոզարշավի ողջ ընթացքը կառուցել են իրենց՝ Ադրբեջանի նախագահի օգտին քարոզչություն իրականացնելով։ Այս հանգամանքը նույնիսկ հարուցել է արևմտյան լրատվամիջոցների անկեղծ զարմանքը։ Ի վերջո Եվրոպան ինքն էլ պետք է հասկանար, որ ի դեմս Ալիևի, գործ ունի սովորական բռնապետի հետ, որը ոչնչի առջև կանգ չի առնելու՝ իշխանությունը զավթելու համար, և այսօր հնչող դատապարտման հայտարարությունները բացարձակ անհեթեթ և անլուրջ են։ Ավելին, Արևմուտքը հրաշալի գիտի, որ Ալիևը պատրաստվում է նոր սադրանքներ իրականացնելու և կանխելու փոխարեն, շարունակում են համագործակցել բռնապետի հետ նավթագազային ոլորտում։ Մինչդեռ առողջ տրամաբանությունը հուշում էր, որ Ալիևին պետք է զսպեն բոլոր միջոցներով, թույլ չտան, որպեսզի վտանգ ներկայացնի ոչ միայն Հայաստանի, այլ մյուս բոլոր հարևանների համար։
