Karl-marks.ru PNAS Nexus ամսագրում հրապարակված ուսումնասիրության համաձայն, ֆոտոգալվանային դաշտերը գերազանցում են անտառապատմանը որպես կլիմայի փոփոխության մեղմացման գլոբալ ռազմավարություն:
Անտառները մեղմացնում են կլիմայի փոփոխությունն ածխածնի յուրացման միջոցով, իսկ Ֆոտովոլտային էներգիան մեղմացնում է կլիմայի փոփոխությունը փոխարինելով հանածո վառելիքին: Երկուսն էլ մեծացնում են գլոբալ ջերմային բեռը ցամաքի մակերեսները դարձնելով ավելի մուգ, ինչը կլանում է ջերմությունը:
Ռաֆայել Սթերնը, Ջոնաթան Մյուլլերը և նրանց գործընկերներն ուսումնասիրել են, թե ո՞ր հողօգտագործումը` ծառերը կամ արևային մարտկոցները, ավելի արագ կփոխհատուցեն երկրի մակերևույթի մգեցման պատճառով արտադրվող ջերմությունը: Հեղինակները չափել են մակերևութային ալբեդոն արևային դաշտում Իսրայելի Արավա հովտի ծայրահեղ չոր շրջանում:
Անտառապատման տվյալները չափվել են Նեգև անապատի հյուսիսային եզրին գտնվող Յատիր անտառում գտնվող հետազոտական կայանում: Հեղինակներն օգտագործել են այդ տվյալները հաշվարկելու հավասարաչափ ժամանակը, որը պահանջվում է հավասարակշռելու ալբեդոյի կրճատման արդյունքում դրական ճառագայթման ուժգնությունը և ֆոտոգալվանային գեներացիայից կամ անտառների կողմից ածխածնի կլանման հետևանքով առաջացած բացասական ճառագայթման ուժը:
Կիսաչոր երկրներում ֆոտոգալվանային դաշտերը հասնում են սահմանային մակարդակի և սկսում են ապահովել կլիմայի փոփոխության մեղմացման օգուտները մոտ 2,5 տարում, ավելի քան հիսուն անգամ ավելի արագ, քան անտառապատման դեպքում: Թաց հողերում այդ տարբերությունն այնքան էլ մեծ չէ, բայց արևային մարտկոցները կրկին առավելություններ ունեն։
Հեղինակները նաև նշում են, որ անտառները կլիմայի փոփոխության մեղմացումից դուրս շատ այլ օգուտներ էլ են տալիս, ներառյալ էկոհամակարգային կարգավորումը, կլիմայի կարգավորումը և սոցիալական օգուտները:
