Ս. Ստեփանոսն Ընդհանրական Եկեղեցու ամենասիրված սրբերից է, Քրիստոսի սիրո վարդապետության համար նահատակված առաջինը մարտիրոսը: Վարքագրական աղբյուրների համաձայն` նա սերում էր Հուդայի թագավորական զարմից, Քրիստոս Աստծո ցեղակիցն ու օրինապահ ծնողների զավակն էր:

Կայիափա քահանայապետի ծառան էր: Տիրոջը տուն տանելիս՝ Ստեփանոսը գլխի վարշամակը փռում է Երկնավոր Վարդապետի ոտքերի տակ` արտահայտելով իր անդավաճան ու անկեղծ սերը: Այս ամենը զայրացնում է քահանայապետին,  ով նրան դուրս է վռնդում: Նա ականատես է լինում Տիրոջ մահվանն ու թաղմանը, բայց վերստին ուրախանում է առաքյալների հետ Աստվածորդու հրաշափառ հարությամբ:

Ըստ Հայ Եկեղեցու եռամեծ վարդապետ Ս. Գրիգոր Տաթևացու` նա գնում է Ս. Պետրոս և Ս. Հովհաննես առաքյալների մոտ, մկրտվում: Մկրտության պահին ջրի վրա երևում է լուսապսակ: Այդ զարմանահրաշ դեպքից հետո նրան անվանում են «Ստեփանոս», որ նշանակում է պսակավոր: Գործք առաքելոցից հայտնի է, որ Հոգեգալստից հետո առաքյալները սեղաններն էին սպասարկում, կարիքավորներին՝ նպաստներ բաշխում: Եվ օրեցօր Հիսուսին հավատացողների թիվն ավելանում էր: Քանի որ առաքյալներն ի վիճակի չէին հոգալ բոլորի կարիքները, ուստի իրենց հետևորդներին պատվիրում են, որ բարի համբավ ունեցող 7 մարդ ընտրեն` սեղանները սպասարկելու համար:

Ըստ Ս. Ղուկաս Ավետարանչի` ընտրյալների մեջ էր նաև Ս. Ստեփանոսը, «որ հավատով և Սուրբ Հոգով լցված մի մարդ էր» (Գործք. 6:5): Առաքյալները Քրիստոսից ստացած իշխանությամբ ձեռնադրում են նրանց` արժանացնելով սարկավագի պատասխանատու աստիճանին: Իսկ Ս. Ստեփանոսն Աստծուց տրված շնորհներով և զորությամբ զանազան հրաշքներ էր գործում ժողովրդի մեջ: Ժողովարանում շատերն էին փորձում վիճել նրա հետ, բայց նրա իմաստությունը ոչ ոք չուներ:

Ուստի չարակամները համոզում են որոշ մարդկանց, որ ասեն, թե Ստեփանոսը հայհոյում է Աստծուն և Մովսես մարգարեին: Գրգռելով ժողովրդին, քահանաներին և օրենսգետներին` նրան ատյան են տանում: Ս. Ստեփանոսն իր պաշտպանական ճառով ապացուցում է ներկաներին, որ Հիսուս է խոստացյալ Մեսիան, իսկ հրեաներին հանդիմանում է իրենց խստասրտության համար: Նրան քաղաքից դուրս քարկոծում են, զգեստները դնում Սավուղ անունով մի երիտասարդի առջև: Սավուղը Ս. Պողոս առաքյալն էր, ով սկզբում հալածում էր քրիստոնյաներին: Նա ճանաչեց ճշմարիտ Աստծուն` Հիսուս Քրիստոսին` հետագայում դառնալով Ավետարանի ամենաեռանդուն քարոզիչը: Ս. Ստեփանոսը դարձավ Քրիստոսի համար նահատակված առաջին վկան ու մարտիրոսը և այդ պատճառով կոչվեց ՆԱԽԱՎԿԱ:

Ըստ ավանդության` Ս. Պողոս առաքյալի ուսուցիչ Գամաղիելը և նրա եղբայր Նիկոդեմոսը, ովքեր Հիսուսի ծածուկ աշակերտներից էին, սրբի մարմինը թաղել են իրենց ագարակում: Շատ չանցած՝ Ս. Ստեփանոսի նշխարները հայտնաբերել է Ղուկիանոս անունով մի երեց, և Երուսաղեմի Հովհան Հայրապետը դրանք դրել է Ս. Սիոնում: 5-րդ դարում Հուլիանե իշխանուհին Երուսաղեմում հայտնաբերել է սրբի տապանակը, տարել Կ.Պոլիս, հետագայում բերել Վենետիկ` ամփոփելով Ս. Գևորգ կղզու մայր եկեղեցում:

Ս. Ստեփանոս նախասարկավագն իր աներեր հավատով, սրբակենցաղությամբ, նվիրումով, ծառայասիրությամբ և մյուս առաքինություններով օրինակ է քրիստոնյաների համար` Ճշմարտությունը ճանաչելու և Տիրոջ քաղցրությունը ճաշակելու համար: Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցին Ս. Ստեփանոս նախավկայի և առաջին մարտիրոսի հիշատակը տոնում է Սուրբ Ծնունդին նախորդող ավագ տոների ժամանակ:
