Արդյո՞ք հավատարմության գոտիներն իրականում գոյություն ունեցել են, թե՞ այնուամենայնիվ սա միֆ է, որը հորինել են արդեն մեր ժամանակներում:

Կանացի հավատարմության գոտին միջնադարին վերաբերող ամենահայտնի ու քննարկված մշակութային արտեֆակտներից է, որն առավել հաճախ է հիշատակվում ժամանակակից ֆիլմերում, գրականությունում և գիտահետազոտական նյութերում։ Համարվում է, որ այս զազրելի մեխանիզմը հորինվել է Խաչակրաց արշավանքների ժամանակ, երբ ասպետները, մեկնելով հեռավոր արշավների, հագցնում էին իրենց կանանց այս սարքերից, իսկ բանալին տանում էին իրենց հետ՝ հանգիստ լինելով, որ կարող են վստահ լինել կնոջ հավատարմության մեջ մինչև իրենց վերադարձը։ Իսկ եթե կինը համարձակվեր դավաճանել ու հղիանար, ապա ապօրինածին զավակին անխուսափելի մահ էր սպասվում։

Այսպիսի գոտիների գոյության գաղափարն իսկ անհեթեթ, վայրի ու հակահիգիենիկ է թվում։ Ինչպե՞ս կարող էին կանայք ամիսներ շարունակ իրենց կոնքազդրային հատվածում կրել մետաղական ծանր այս սարքը։ Արդեն մեկ շաբաթ հետո դրանք պետք է որ վնասին նրա մաշկը, իսկ բացված վերքերն անխուսափելիորեն կբորբոքվեին ու կթարախակալեին, ինչը կբերեր սեռական օրգանների և արյան վարակման։ Սակայն կարծես թե քչերն են մտածում այս մասին, առավել ևս, որ միջնադարյան տղամարդկանցից բարձր գիտակցություն ու տարրական գիտելիքներ ակնկալելն էլ սխալ կլիներ։

Միջնադարյան հավատարմության գոտիների մասին սկսել են գրել որպես հաստատ տեղ գտած պատմական փաստ առնվազն 18-րդ դարից, իսկ որոշ նմուշներ անգամ ցուցադրվել են թանգարաններում։ Սակայն ամերիկացի պատմաբան, միջին դարերի մշակույթի գիտակ Ալբերտ Կլասենը, ուսումնասիրելով այս օբյեկտների մասին բոլոր հնարավոր հիշատակումները, եկել է միանշանակ եզրահանգման. միջնադարում հավատարմության գոտիներ երբեք էլ գոյություն չեն ունեցել, ու դրանք նոր ժամանակների էրոտիկ միֆերից են լոկ։

«Հավատարմության գոտի» (cingulum castitatis) արտահայտությունը հանդիպում է բացառապես միջնադարյան աստվածաբանական աշխատություններում, ու դա այլաբանություն է, որը նշանակում է մաքրություն ու առաքինություն. «Ազատիր ինձ նախկին մեղքերիցս, պաշտպանիր ինձ ներկաներց ու գոտեպնդիր ապագայի մեղքերի համար։ Տուր ինձ չափավորություն ուտելու և խմելու հարցում, հավատարմության ու առաքինության գոտի, սրտի և շուրթերի մաքրություն»,- խնդրում է Աստծուց Կառլոս Մեծի պալատական աստվածաբան ու գիտնական Ալկուինը։ «Նրանք դուրս եկան կանթեղներով ու գոտևորված կոնքերով՝ այրվող լուսարձակները ձեռքին, որպեսզի նրանց մարմնին կապվի հավատարմության գոտին, իսկ նրանց գործերի լույսն օրինակ ծառայի իրենց հարևանների համար հանուն Հոր փառքի»,- այսպես է մեկնաբանում միստիկ Բերնարդ Կլերվոսացին 10 կույսերի մասին առակը, սակայն այս և բոլոր այլ միջնադարյան սկզբնաղյուրներում ոչ մի մետաղական կոնստրուկցիա, որը փականներ ու կողպեքներ ունի, չի հիշատակվում։
