Ռուսաստանը միշտ կհիշի 1988-ի Հայաստանում տեղի ունեցած երկրաշարժը՝ այն ընկալելով որպես իր դժբախտություն. ճեպազրույցի ժամանակ ասաց ՌԴ ԱԳՆ պաշտոնական ներկայացուցիչ Մարիա Զախարովան։
Նա հիշեց, որ 1988 թվականի դեկտեմբերի 7-ին Հայաստանը կրեց իր պատմության ամենամեծ աղետներից մեկը՝ սարսափելի երկրաշարժը, որի էպիկենտրոնը Սպիտակ քաղաքում էր։ Այն ավերել է բազմաթիվ բնակեցված տարածքներ և խլել մի քանի տասնյակ հազար քաղաքացիների կյանք։ Տարբեր գնահատականներով՝ աղետի հետեւանքով ավերվել է 9 մլն քառ. մ բնակելի տարածք: Սա կազմել է հանրապետության ընդհանուր բնակարանային ֆոնդի մոտ 20%-ը։ Ավելի քան կես միլիոն մարդ մնացել է անօթևան։
Նրա խոսքով՝ ամենաբարձր պրոֆեսիոնալիզմն ու հերոսությունը դրսևորել են 20 հազար զինվորներն ու սպաները, ովքեր աշխատել են փլատակների մաքրման ուղղությամբ։ Իհարկե, հատուկ դեր է հատկացվել կամավորներին։ Մարդասիրական օգնություն է ժամանել արհմիութենական բոլոր հանրապետություններից, ժամանել է 45 հազար շինարար։
