2001թ.-ի հունվարի 15-ին հասանելի է դարձել «Վիքիպեդիա» առցանց հանրագիտարանի առաջին տարբերակը

Ժոռա Գրիգորյանը Ֆեյսբուքյան իր էջում գրում է.
Վիքիպեդիան ազատ բովանդակությամբ, բազմալեզու հանրագիտարանային նախագիծ է, որին հովանավորում է շահույթ չհետապնդող Վիքիմեդիա հիմնադրամը։
Անունը կազմված է վիքի (համագործակցական կայքեր ստեղծելու տեխնոլոգիա, հավայան վիքի բառից, որը նշանակում է «արագ») և հունարեն էնցիկլոպեդիա բառերից։ Վիքիպեդիայի 20 միլիոն հոդվածներն ստեղծել են կամավոր մասնակիցներ, իսկ գրեթե բոլոր հոդվածները կարող են խմբագրել համացանցից օգտվող անձինք։ Վիքիպեդիա նախագիծն սկսել են Ջիմի Ուելսը և Լարի Սանգերը 2001թ.-ի հունվարին և ներկայումս այն համացանցի ամենաօգտագործվող հանրագիտարանային կայքն է:
2007 թվականի սեպտեմբերին այն ուներ 253 լեզվական տարբերակ։ Ավանդական հանրագիտարանային հոդվածների հետ մեկտեղ կան նաև ալմանախ, թերթեր և ներկա իրադարձություններ թեմաներ։ Վիքիպեդիան ներկայումս համացանցում ամենահաճախ այցելվող տեղեկատվական կայքերից մեկն է։ Ամբողջ աշխարհից օրական գրեթե 80 միլիոն մուտք է լինում այս կայք։
Վիքիպեդիան պարունակում է մոտավորապես 8,29 միլիոն հոդված: Դրանցից ավելի քան 2.000.000-ը պատկանում է անգլերեն տարբերակին։ Հանրագիտարանն սկսեց գործել որպես փորձագետների կողմից գրվող Նուպեդիա հանրագիտարանի շարունակությունը։ Հանրագիտարանն աշխատում է վիքի համակարգչային ծրագրով և ունի բազմաթիվ քույր նախագծեր, ինչպիսիք են օրինակ՝ Վիքիդարանը և Վիքիգրքերը։
Վիքիպեդիան գնահատվում է անվճար լինելու, ազատության և մատչելիության, թեմաների հսկայական բազմազանության և մանրամասն տեղեկությունների համար։ Վիքիպեդիան քննադատում են ավանդական հանրագիտարանի համեմատ արժանահավատության պակասի համար և ավանդական հանրագիտարանային թեմաների վերաբերյալ հոդվածների թերությունների համար։
