Նյու Յորքի համալսարանի գիտնականները պարզել են, որ հին եգիպտացիները ժայռից քանդակել են Մեծ Սֆինքսը, որի սկզբնական տեսքը տվել են քամիներն ու ավազները։ Հետազոտությունը հրապարակվել է Physical Review Fluids ամսագրում: 

Երկրաբան Ֆարուկ Էլ-Բազը 1981 թվականին Smithsonian Magazine-ի հոդվածում առաջարկել է, որ, ի տարբերություն բուրգերի, Մեծ Սֆինքսն ամբողջությամբ չի կառուցվել հին եգիպտացիների կողմից:

Փոխարենը, կարծում էր գիտնականը, հնագույն մասոնները միայն առասպելական արարածի ձև էին տալիս հսկայական ժայռին, որն արդեն սֆինքսի տեսք ուներ: Նոր հետազոտության ընթացքում Նյու Յորքի համալսարանի գիտնականները նմանակել են այն պայմանները, որոնք գոյություն են ունեցել 4500 տարի առաջ, երբ ստեղծվել է Սֆինքսը:

Աշխատանքը կենտրոնացած է եղել յարդանգների` անսովոր ժայռերի գոյացումների վերարտադրման վրա, որոնք ձևավորվել են անապատներում քամուց, փոշուց և ավազից: Հավանաբար, հին եգիպտացիները հանդիպել են պառկած կենդանու ձևով մեծ յարդանգի, որը նրանց ոգեշնչել է ստեղծել Սֆինքսի արձանը:

Մոդելավորման համար գիտնականները վերցրել են փափուկ կավ, որի ներսում ներկառուցված է եղել ավելի կոշտ նյութ, այնուհետև լվացել են այս գոյացությունները ջրի արագ հոսքով, որպեսզի նմանակեն քամին:

«Մեր լաբորատոր փորձերը ցույց են տվել, որ ուշագրավ Սֆինքսի նման ձևեր կարող են իրականում առաջանալ արագ հոսքերի հետևանքով քայքայված նյութերից: Այսօր իսկապես կան յարդանգներ, որոնք նման են նստած կամ պառկած կենդանիների, ինչը հաստատում է մեր բացահայտումները»,-նշել է հետազոտության ավագ հեղինակ Լեյֆ Ռիսթոֆը:
