Հայ եկեղեցու հրեշտակաբանության համաձայն` հրեշտակներն անմարմին հոգիներ են՝ իմացական, անձնիշխան, մշտաշարժ, անսեռ, անմահ և սպասավոր Աստծուն: Ըստ եկեղեցու սուրբ հայրերի` հրեշտակները, իբրև լուսեղեն էակներ, ստեղծվել են արարչագործության առաջին օրը` լույսի հետ միասին: Աստծո հրահանգով նրանք կոչված են սպասավորելու մարդ արարածին: Հետևաբար նրանք սպասավոր հոգիներ են, որոնք երկնաբնակ լինելով հանդերձ, իրենց մասնակցությունն են բերում նաև երկրավոր կյանքի ընթացքին, գործում են ժամանակի և տարածքի մեջ ապրող մարդու հետ, մարդու համար:

Հրեշտակներին անվանում են նաև Աստծո պատգամավորներ, ովքեր մեզ են փոխանցում Տիրոջ կամքը: Ս. Գիրքը վկայում է, որ նրանք բազմաքանակ են: Ըստ Ս. Դիոնիսիոս Արիսպագացու` հրեշտակներն ունեն ինը դաս` Աթոռներ, Քերովբեներ, Սերովբեներ, Տերություններ, Զորություններ, Իշխանություններ, Պետություններ, Հրեշտակապետեր և Հրեշտակներ:

Գաբրիել անունը, որ նշանակում է «Աստծո այր», Բարձրյալի անմիջական պաշտոնյան է, որին վերապահված է Տիրոջ վերին խորհուրդներն ավետարանելու շնորհ: Այս հրեշտակապետը, որ ուղարկվել էր Տիրոջ կողմից, Ս. Կույս Մարիամին բարի լուրը հաղորդեց, իսկ Զաքարիային` Ս.  Հովհաննես Մկրտչի ծննդյան ավետիսը:

Միքայել անունը, որ նշանակում է «Ո՞վ է Աստծուն նման», Երկնավոր Արքայի փառքի և նրա ժողովրդի պաշտպանության համար մարտնչողն է, որին տրված է կառավարելու և թագավորելու շնորհ: Միքայել հրեշտակապետի անունը չորս անգամ վկայակոչված է Ս. Գրքում (Դան. Ժ 13, ԺԲ 1, Հուդ. Ա 9, Հայտ. ԺԲ 7):
