«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Հավանաբար քչերը գիտեն, թե ինչ է կապոեյրան: Իհարկե, ֆիլմերում և գովազդներում այն ներկայում դարձել է բավականին տարածված ժամանցային հավելում, և որոշ ռեժիսորներ չեն անտեսում այն հնարքներն ու ակրոբատիկան, որոնցով հարուստ է կապոեյրա մարտարվեստը: Բայց գործնականում ոչ մի տեղ այդ մարտարվեստի փիլիսոփայությունը արտացոլված չէ: Իսկ սկզբունքորեն ինչո՞վ է այդ մարտարվեստը տարբերվում մարտարվեստների այլ շատ ուրիշ տեսակներից: Կապոեյրայի դասերի շնորհիվ մարդիկ կարող են ոչ միայն ձևավորել գեղեցիկ, ուժեղ մարմին, այլ նաև էներգիայով լիցքավորվել, ձեռք բերել կյանքի դժվարին իրավիճակներում արագ արձագանքելու ունակություն, և պարտադիր չէ, որ դա կապված լինի փողոցային կռիվների հետ: Կապոեյրան պարզապես ապրելակերպ է:

Կապոեյրայում հարձակվողներ կամ պաշտպանվողներ չկան, ցանկացած հարձակում կարելի է հետ մղել, իսկ պաշտպանությունը վերածել հարձակման: Իսկ ինչպե՞ս է սկսվել կապոեյրայի պատմությունը: Այդ մարտարվեստը գալիս է Բրազիլիայից՝ Կապոեյրայից, որտեղ շաքարեղեգի պլանտացիաներում աշխատում էին Գվինեայից, Անգոլայից, Մոզամբիկից և Կոնգոյից բերված սևամորթ ստրուկները: Շատերը չէին դիմանում ստրկությանը և փախչում էին անտառներ, որտեղ էլ կազմակերպում էին յուրատեսակ ենթամշակույթ՝ աֆրիկյան և հնդկական մշակույթների խառնուրդ։ Այսպես թե այնպես, կապոեյրան կրում է պարի նշաններ, սակայն վեճ կա այն մասին, թե ի՞նչն է հիմք հանդիսացել՝ երիտասարդ ռազմիկների պա՞րը, թե՞ պարզապես աֆրիկյան այն ազգային պարը, որը հետագայում մարտական երանգ է ստացել։

Կողքից նայելիս՝ ոչ մի կասկածելի բան չկար, նույնիսկ պլանտացիաներում. ստրուկները երեկոները հավաքվում էին զվարճանալու, բոլորովին անմեղ գործերով էին զբաղվում, երգում իրենց ժողովրդական երգերը, ծափ էին տալիս ու թմբուկ խփում, նաև պարում։ Եվ պարողների անհասկանալի գեղեցիկ շարժումները պար էին հիշեցնում, ոչ թե ձեռնամարտ։ Վերահսկիչները ոչինչ չէին կասկածում, իսկ ստրուկները ստեղծել էին պար, որը մահաբեր, ծիսական հմայություն էր, որում բառերի փոխարեն շարժումներ էին։ Ժամանակ անցավ, և 19-րդ դարի վերջում ստրկությունը վերացավ։ Այնուամենայնիվ, դա քիչ օգնեց մետիսներին, նեգրերին ու հնդկացիներին, նրանք գործնականում մնացին օրենքից դուրս:

Եվ կապոեյրան նույնպես, ինչպես նաև այն ամենը, ինչ պատկանում էր երկրի ոչ սպիտակամորթ բնակչությանը, արգելվեց: Բրազիլիայի հռչակումը՝ որպես հանրապետություն, կապոեյրան դարձրեց ամբողջովին ընդհատակյա պայքարի ձև: Միայն քառասուն տարի անց երկրում փոխվեց քաղաքական իրավիճակը, և այդ ժողովրդական արվեստը սկսեցին ողջունել կյանքի բոլոր ոլորտներում։ Կապոեյրան ճանաչվեց որպես մարտարվեստ, սպորտ, որը միավորում է յուրահատուկ կոլորիտը, մարտարվեստը, սպորտը և հզոր էներգիան։
