Ռուբեն Վարդանյանը ֆեյսբուքյան իր էջում գրել է․

Ցավով տեղեկացա աշխարհահռչակ գիտնական, պատմաբան, մեր ժողովրդի արժանի զավակ Ռիչարդ Հովհաննիսյանի մահվան մասին: Լինելով Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը վերապրածների ժառանգ՝ նա իր ողջ կյանքը նվիրել էր հայ ժողովրդի պատմությունն ուսումնասիրելու և այն աշխարհին ներկայացնելու գործին: Հսկայական է նրա ներդրումը հայ ժողովրդի պատմության և հայագիտական հետազոտությունների ոլորտներում:
 
Ապրելով հայրենիքից հեռու, մեծ ճանաչում ունենալով ամերիկյան գիտակրթական ասպարեզում՝ Ռիչարդ Հովհաննիսյանը սերտորեն կապված էր հայրենիքի հետ, Հայաստանի գիտությունների ազգային ակադեմիայի արտասահմանյան անդամ էր և իր կապերով ու գործունեությամբ մեծապես նպաստում էր Հայաստանում պատմագիտության զարգացմանը:
 
«Պատմությունը կարող է մեռնել, եթե մոռացվի», - մի անգամ ասել էր Ռիչարդ Հովհաննիսյանն ու որպեսզի դա թույլ չտար՝ դարձել մի շարք կոթողային աշխատությունների, այդ թվում՝ Հայաստանի Առաջին Հանրապետության պատմության քառահատորյակի հեղինակը:
 
Ափսոսում եմ, որ հայաստանցի երիտասարդ պատմաբաններն ու գիտնականները նրա դասախոսություններն ունկնդրելու հնարավորություն չեն ունեցել, ինչը ևս մեկ անգամ վկայում է, որ մենք չենք կարողացել լիարժեք օգտագործել Սփյուռքի հսկայական ներուժը:
 
Նրա նման գիտնականներն են «կենդանի պահել» մեր պատմությունը, այն փոխանցել սերունդներին: Ու մենք էլ հետևելով նրա օրինակին՝ պետք է շարունակենք սերունդներին փոխանցել մեր ժողովրդի պատմությունը, այդ թվում՝ Արցախյան շարժման պատմությունը, որովհետև մեր հերոսների սխրանքը մեզ ուժ է տալիս:
