Սիերա Լեոնեում փոթորկի ժամանակ տապալվել է երկրի պատմական խորհրդանիշը՝ 73-մետրանոց բամբակի ծառը

Փոթորիկը Ֆրիթաունում տապալել է 73-մետրանոց բամբակի ծառը, որը Սիերա Լեոնեի պատմական խորհրդանիշն էր: Այդ մասին տեղեկանում ենք ТАСС գործակալությունից:
«Կատարվածը մեծ կորուստ է ազգի համար», - հայտարարել է երկրի նախագահ Ջուլիուս Մաադա Բիոն:
Նա նշել է, որ Սիերա Լեոնեի ստեղծման պահից ի վեր այդ ծառը համարվում էր երկրի ազատության խորհրդանիշը։ Բիոն ասել է, որ այն վայրում, որտեղ աճում էր ծառը, կկանգնեցվի այն հիշեցնող խորհրդանիշ։
Պահպանվել է միայն բնի ստորին մասը՝ 3 մ-ից ոչ ավելի բարձրությամբ: Ծառի ստույգ տարիքն անհայտ է, բայց այն հաստատ գոյություն է ունեցել արդեն 18-րդ դարի վերջին, երբ Հյուսիսային Ամերիկայից Սիերա Լեոնե է ժամանել նախկին թխամորթ ստրուկների խումբը: Նրանք կռվել էին անգլիացիների կողմից ԱՄՆ-ի անկախության պատերազմի ժամանակ և անգլիական բանակի մնացած զինվորների հետ հեռացել Կանադա։
Կարճատև ապրելով Կանադայի Նոր Շոտլանդիայի նահանգում՝ նախկին ստրուկները որոշել են վերադառնալ պատմական հայրենիք։ 1130 ամերիկացի վերաբնակներ 1792 թվականին ժամանել էին Սիերա Լեոնեի ափամերձ շրջան, որտեղ դրանից հինգ տարի առաջ հիմնվել էր նախկին ստրուկների ոչ մեծ բնակավայր: Որոշվեց հիմնել նոր քաղաք և այն անվանել Ֆրիթաուն՝ «ազատների քաղաք»։ Որպես բնակության վայր նրանք ընտրել են լայնատարած դաշտը, որտեղ աճում էր ծառը։ Քաղաքի հիմնադրման առաջին գործողությունը եղել է կրոնական արարողությունը, որը տեղի է ունեցել 1792 թվականի մարտի 11-ին այդ ծառի շուրջ։
Ազգային կենդանի խորհրդանիշ դարձած ծառի տակ ամեն տարի արվում էին աղոթքներ՝ նվիրված Սիերա Լեոնեի խաղաղությանը և բարգավաճմանը։ Ծառը պատկերված է ազգային արժույթի թղթադրամների վրա:
