Հայաստանի Հանրապետության նախագահ Վահագն Խաչատուրյանը երկրաշարժի 34-րդ տարելիցի կապակցությամբ ուղերձ է հղել: Ուղերձում, մասնավորապես, ասվում է.
«Սիրելի հայրենակիցներ, այսօր մենք ոգեկոչում ենք Սպիտակի ավերիչ երկրաշարժի անմեղ զոհերին և խոնարհվում նրանց հիշատակի առաջ:
1988 թվականի դեկտեմբերի 7-ը մեր պատմության ամենաողբերգական օրերից մեկն է։
34 տարի առաջ բնության աղետին զոհ գնացին շուրջ երեք տասնյակ հազար մեր քաղաքացիներ, հարյուր հազարավորները դարձան անօթևան: Երկրի տնտեսությանը, բնակչության ներուժին և հոգեբանությանը հասցվեց հսկայական հարված, որի հետևանքները զգալի են նաև այսօր։
Միևնույն ժամանակ, բնական աղետները փորձություններ են պետությունների ու ժողովուրդների համար, որոնք ի ցույց են դնում պետականության ու հասարակության դիմադրողականության ներքին պաշարը։
Մեր ժողովուրդը կարողացավ ծանր ճիգով, ընթացող պատերազմի ու պետականության կերտման բախտորոշ այդ ժամանակահատվածում միաբանվել, ամրանալ ոգով ու կամքով և կրկին կառուցել ու ստեղծել։
Այս նվիրական գործից անմասն չմնացին ամբողջ աշխարհում սփռված մեր հայրենակիցները, հայ ժողովրդի մեծ բարեկամ պետություններն ու անհատները, որոնք իրենց անգնահատելի ու անուրանալի աջակցությունը ցուցաբերեցին երկրաշարժի հետևանքները վերացնելու, աղետից տուժած մեր բնակավայրերը, կրթական ու արդյունաբերական կառույցները վերականգնելու գործին:
Մեր պետության և հասարակության բոլոր ջանքերն ամեն օր պետք է միտված լինեն երկրաշարժի նյութական ու բարոյական հետևանքների վերացմանն ու չեզոքացմանը, որովհետև անմեղ զոհերի հիշատակը հարգելու լավագույն միջոցը վերականգնված, զարգացող ու ծաղկող մեր քաղաքներն ու գյուղերն են, Գյումրիի, Սպիտակի, Վանաձորի ու տասնյակ համայնքների կրթական ու արդյունաբերական կառույցները, կանաչող այգիներն ու լուսավոր փողոցները»:
