Ս. Հովհան Ոսկեբերան Հայրապետը եկեղեցու ամենանշանավոր ու շնորհալի հայրերից է: Նա ծնվել է 347 թվականին Անտիոքում: Իր ուսումը ստացել է Անտիոքի աստվածաբանական դպրոցում և ճարտասանության մեջ հմտացել Լիբանիոսի դպրոցում: Դեռ երիտասարդ տարիքից իրեն նվիրել է ճգնողական կյանքին: 381 թվականին Մելետիոս Անտիոքացու կողմից ձեռնադրվել է սարկավագ, իսկ 386 թվականին Փլաբիանոսի կողմից` քահանա: Այս ընթացքում սքանչելի ու պերճախոս քարոզների շնորհիվ արժանացել է «Ոսկեբերան» տիտղոսին: 398 թվականին, հակառակ իր կամքի, ընտրվում է Կ. Պոլսի պատրիարք և եռանդով ու նախանձախնդրությամբ ձեռնարկում մայրաքաղաքի բարեկարգումը, որ հեռացած էր քրիստոնեական կենցաղից և ապրում էր անբարո ու վեճերով լի կյանքով:
Ոսկեբերանը կշտամբում էր ամեն տեսակ անբարոյականություն, ինչի պատճառով էլ իր վրա է հրավիրում Եվդոքսիա կայսրուհու զայրույթը: Սուրբ Հայրապետի դեմ է դուրս գալիս նաև Ալեքսանդրիայի Թեոփիլոս պատրիարքը, որը ձգտում էր Կ. Պոլսի պատրիարք դառնալ: 403 թվականին եկեղեցական ժողովի կողմից, 29 անհիմն ամբաստանություններով, աքսորման հրաման է տրվում, սակայն աքսոր մեկնելու գիշերն այնպիսի ահավոր երկրաշարժ ու հրդեհներ են լինում, որ կայսրուհին նրան ետ է կանչում իր աթոռին:
Հովհան Ոսկեբերանը շարունակում է նույն խստությամբ քննադատել արքունական զեխությունները: Հակառակ ժողովրդի համակրանքին և Արևմտյան եկեղեցու պաշտպանության` Արկադիոս կայսրն ու Եվդոքսիա կայսրուհին կրկին նրան աքսորելու հրաման են արձակում: Սուրբ Հայրապետն աքսորվում է Պոնտոս և նահատակվում 407 թվականին Կոմանա քաղաքում: Նրա արտասանած վերջին բառերն են. «Փառք քեզ, Աստված, փառք քեզ, ամեն ինչի համար փառք քեզ»:
438 թվականին սրբի մարմինը մեծ հանդիսավորությամբ բերում և ամփոփում են Կ. Պոլսի Ս. Առաքելոց եկեղեցում: Բազմաժանր է նրա մատենագրական վաստակը` մեկնություններ, ճառեր, ներբողներ, թղթեր և այլն, որոնք իրենց բարերար ազդեցությունն են թողել քրիստոնեական մտքի պատմության վրա: Նրա գործերը հայերեն են թարգմանվել իր կենդանության օրոք:
