Ընդդիմադիր «Հայաստան» և «Պատիվ ունեմ» դաշինքների հանրահավաքը լրջորեն մտահոգել է իշխանական կառույցին։ Նիկոլ Փաշինյանի գլխավորած վարչախումբը հստակորեն հասկանում է, որ սեփական ոտքի տակից հողը գնում է։ Ըստ էության, թե՛ Հայաստանի ներսում ընդդիմադիր ուժերի համախմբումն ու իրական զարգացումը, ինչպես նաև Ռուսաստանից եկող դրական ազդակները, ընդդիմությանը հույս են տվել, որ կարող են իշխանափոխություն իրականացնել։ Մինչև ռուս-ուկրաինական պատերազմը շատերը իշխանական քարոզչամեքենայից նշում էին, թե Նիկոլ Փաշինյանը Ռուսաստանի սրտի վարչապետն է և հենց նա է առավել ռուսամետը, քան ցանկացած այլ ընդդիմադիր ուժ։
Ըստ էության, Ուկրաինա Ռուսաստանի ներխուժումը հաստատեց, որ այս պնդումը ոչ միայն հեռու է իրականությունից, այլ նաև Նիկոլ Փաշինյանի գլխավորած իշխանությունը ամեն ինչ անում է, որպեսզի Ռուսաստանի ազդեցության գոտուց դուրս գա և դառնա Արևմտյան ուժերի սպասարկուն։ Արցախի հարցում ռուս սահմանապահների թույլ վերահսկողությունը բավականին մեծ հնարավորություններ ստեղծեց փաշինյանական վարչախմբի համար, Արևմուտքին նոր հավատարմության երդումներ տալու, տարբեր միջազգային կառույցներում ձեռնպահ քվեարկելու և Ռուսաստանի հետ իր կապերը խզելու համար։
