6 տարի առաջ՝ 2016 թ․ ապրիլի 1-ի լույս 2-ի գիշերը, Ադրբեջանի զինված ուժերը, խախտելով Կրակի և ռազմական գործողությունների լիակատար դադարեցման մասին 1994 թ․ մայիսի 12-ի և Հրադադարի ռեժիմի ամրապնդման վերաբերյալ 1995 թ․ փետրվարի 6-ի համաձայնագրերը, նենգաբար հարձակվեցին Արցախի Հանրապետության վրա։Այս մասին հայտարարություն էտարածել Արցախի ԱԳՆ-ն։
 
4 օր շարունակ ադրբեջանական բանակը Արցախի հետ շփման գծի ողջ երկայնքով հարձակման փորձեր ձեռնարկեց՝ ծանր տեխնիկայի, հրետանու և ավիացիայի կիրառմամբ։ Սակայն, կրելով կենդանի ուժի և տեխնիկայի զգալի կորուստներ և չհասնելով առաջադրված նպատակներին, ադրբեջանական կողմը, Ռուսաստանի Դաշնության միջնորդությամբ, ստիպված եղավ դադարեցնել ռազմական գործողությունները։
 
Այնուամենայնիվ, Արցախի սահմանամերձ բնակավայրերի թիրախավորումը շարունակվեց մինչև ապրիլի վերջ։
 
Ադրբեջանի ագրեսիան ուղեկցվել է բազմաթիվ պատերազմական հանցագործություններով․ Ադրբեջանի զինված ուժերի կողմից իրականացվել են խոշտանգումներ, կանխամտածված սպանություններ և մարմինների անարգումներ ինչպես Արցախի Հանրապետության զինծառայողների, այնպես էլ քաղաքացիական բնակչության նկատմամբ։
 
2016 թ․ ապրիլյան ագրեսիան «փորձաքար» դարձավ, այդ թվում նաև՝ ստուգելու միջազգային հանրության արձագանքը Ադրբեջանի կողմից ՄԱԿ-ի Կանոնադրության և միջազգային պարտավորությունների խախտման կապակցությամբ։ Այն փաստը, որ վերոհիշյալ ապօրինի գործողությունները Բաքվի համար որևէ լուրջ քաղաքական և իրավական հետևանքներ չունեցան, էլ ավելի ամրապնդեց Ադրբեջանի իշխանությունների վստահությունն առ այն, որ ամեն ինչ թույլատրելի է, և ուժը գերիշխում է միջազգային իրավունքի նկատմամբ։
 
Ինչպես 2016 թ․ ապրիլյան պատերազմը, այնպես էլ 2020 թ․ Ադրբեջանի 44-օրյա ագրեսիան, չնայած տեղային բնույթին, իսկական փորձություն դարձան միջազգային հարաբերությունների ամբողջ համակարգի համար։ Ագրեսիվ պատերազմների սանձազերծման անպատժելիությունը հանգեցրեց միջազգային իրավունքի այնպիսի հիմնարար սկզբունքների սասանման, ինչպիսիք են ուժի չկիրառումը, վեճերի խաղաղ կարգավորումը, միջազգային պարտավորությունների բարեխիղճ կատարումը և այլն։
 
Հաշվի առնելով, որ Ադրբեջանի իշխանությունները հրաժարվում են ադրբեջանա-ղարաբաղյան հակամարտության խաղաղ կարգավորման շուրջ բանակցություններից, շարունակում են խախտել իրենց պարտավորությունները և չեն դադարեցնում ագրեսիվ գործողությունները, մենք միջազգային հանրությունից ակնկալում ենք հստակ քաղաքական քայլեր, որոնք երաշխավորում են Արցախի ժողովրդի կողմից իր հավաքական իրավունքների և մարդու ազատությունների իրացումը՝ առանց որևէ սահմանափակումների:
