Նիհարելուն ամենաշատը նպաստում են սպորտային պարապմունքները, որոնց համար մարդը վճարում է։ Այս եզրահանգմանն են եկել ամերիկացի գիտնականները՝ փորձելով պարզել, թե ինչու մարդու քաշի վրա չեն ազդում գիրանալու դեմ տարբեր ծրագրերը։
Գիտնականները սկսել են աշխատել այս հետազոտության ուղղությամբ այն բանից հետո, երբ իմացել են, որ ամերիկյան որոշ ընկերություններ վճարում են իրենց աշխատակիցներին կիլոգրամներ կորցնելու համար, սակայն վերջիններս կամ շատ դանդաղ են նիհարում, կամ ընդհանրապես արդյունքի չէր հասնում։
Հետազոտողները պարզել են, որ մարդիկ ավելի ակտիվ են սպորտով զբաղվում և քաշ գցում միայն այն դեպքում, երբ իրենք են վճարում մարզիչներին այդ պարապմունքների համար։ Իսկ եթե աշխատակիցները գործատուից են խրախուսվում, նրանք արդեն չեն ձգտում ծանրաբեռնել իրենց ֆիզիկական պարապմունքներով և խիստ դիետաներով։
Հետազոտողները փորձ են անցկացրել և մշակել իրապես գործող մի ծրագիր։ Ծրագրին մասնակցել ցանկացող աշխատակիցները իրենց բանկային հաշվին որոշակի գումար են ստացել, բայց պայմանով, որ կարող են այդ գումարը ստանալ միայն այն դեպքում, եթե մարդը կորցնի որոշակի կիլոգրամներ սահմանված ժամանակամիջոցում։ Արդյունքում փորձի մասնակիցները կորցրել են ավելի քան երկու կիլոգրամ։
«Մարդն այնպես է ստեղծված, որ նրան պետք են կոշտ պայմաններ, որպեսզի ձգտի հասնել իր նպատակին, առանց դրա շատերի մոտ պարզապես ոչինչ չի ստացվում»,- ասել է հետազոտության հեղինակներից մեկը՝ նշելով, որ շատերի համար դիետա պահելը և սպորտով զբաղվելն ավելի դժվար է, քան ծխելը թողնելը. «Առանց ծխելու ապրել հնարավոր է, առանց ուտելիքի՝ ոչ»։
