Հյուսիսային Իռլանդիայից 25-ամյա Բեն Ուայթսայդն իր 24-ամյա ընկերուհու՝ Անեկա Շելիի հետ վերջին երեք տարիներին Չինաստանի Հոնգկոնգ քաղաքում անգլերեն լեզու էր դասավանդում։
Արկածախնդիր զույգը որոշեց մի քանի ամիս անցկացնել Ասիան հետազոտելով, սակայն Յունան նահանգի Ցատկող վագրի կիրճում երկօրյա արշավի ժամանակ Ուայթսայդը քերծեց ձախ ոտքի ծունկը։
Վերքը վարակ ստացավ մարմինը խժռող միջատով, որն այնքան էր խժռել նրա միսը, որ արդեն ոսկորն էր սկսել վարակվել։
 
Ավտոբուսով 14-ժամյա ճանապարհին նա սկսեց գանգատվել, որ ցավն ավելի է ուժեղանում, նրա ջերմությունը բարձրացավ, ու նա սկսեց փսխել։
Զույգը փորձեց հասնել մոտակա հիվանդանոց, որտեղ նրան առանց բարձի ու անկողնային սպիտակեղենի մահճակալ առաջարկվեց, ու հակաբիոտիկներ նշանակեցին։ Վարակը շարունակվում էր տարածվել, և նրանց խորհուրդ տվեցին հնարավորինս շուտ տեղափոխվել Բանգկոկ։
Նրանք մեկնեցին Բանգկոկ, որտեղ մագնիսառեզոնանսային հետազոտության արդյունքում պարզվեց, որ Բենն անհապաղ վիրահատության կարիք ունի։
Բժիշկները ստիպված էին անմիջապես գործի անցնել և ժամանակ չունեին հավելյալ հետազոտություն անցկացնել՝ նրա վիճակի ծանրության մասին ամբողջական պատկերացում կազմելու համար։ Ավելի ուշ պարզվեց, որ Բենը մարմինն ուտող հազվագյուտ մակաբույծով էր վարակվել և եթե նա չվիրահատվեր այն ժամանակ, երբ նրան վիրահատեցին, ապա կարող էր ընդամենը մի քանի օրվա ընթացքում մահանալ։ 
Բարեբախտաբար, նրա օրգանիզմը բուժմանն արագ արձագանքեց, և 4 օրվա ընթացքում նրա երիկամներն արդեն մաքուր էին, և սեպսիսն արդեն չկար։ 13 օր անց նա արդեն այնքան լավ էր, որ նա մեկնեց տուն։
