Ձմեռ պապիկը, կամ ինչպես արևմուտքում ասում են Սանտա Կլաուսը, իրականում հոգևորական է եղել: Նա Ս. Նիկողայոս Հայրապետն էր:

Ժամանակին հույն Նիկողայոս հայրապետը շրջում էր տնետուն եւ չքավոր ընտանիքների պատուհաններին գումար կամ նվերներ դնում: Ձմեռ պապի կերպարը ծագել է հենց այստեղից: «Սանտա Կլաուս» թարգմանաբար սուրբ Նիկողայոս է նշանակում: Այնպես որ, Ձմեռ պապի նվերները մանուկներն իրենց անմեղությամբ ընդունում են որպես պարգեւ Աստծուց:

Հայ ժողովուրդի մեջ ընդունված է Ամանորը կոչել նաև Կաղանդ: Այն նշանակում է որևէ տոն նշելու կոչ, հրավեր: Հետագայում կաղանդը Հայաստանում ստացել է տարեմուտի իմաստը:

Քրիստոնեական առումով Ամանորը հաշվետվության յուրօրինակ մի օր է յուրաքանչյուր մարդու համար: Օր, երբ ամփոփվում են տարվա ընթացքում կատարված գործերը:

Ս. Ծնունդը աշխարհի քրիստոնյաների ամենամեծ և սիրված տոներից է: Իր թե՜ նշանակությամբ, էությամբ, թե՜ խորհրդով Ամանորը զիջում է Ս. Ծննդյանը: Ամանորն ինքնին օրացուցային փոփոխման երևույթ է, և իր մեջ որևէ խորհուրդ չունի: Իսկ Ս. Ծնունդն ամբողջությամբ Խորին Խորհուրդ է` Աստծո Որդու Ծնունդը, որը մարդկության համար դառնում է նոր և անվերջանալի սկիզբ: Իզուր չէ, որ շուրջ 2000 տարի մարդկությունն իր տոմարական բոլոր հաշվարկները կապում է Քրիստոսի Ծնունդով` նախքան Քրիստոս և Քրիստոսի Ծնունդից հետո:

Ս. Ծննդյանը նախորդում է պահք, որը սկսվում է դեկտեմբերի 30-ին և ավարտվում հունվարի 5-ի երեկոյան` Ճրագալույցի Ս. Պատարագով: Այս շրջանում բացառվում է կենդանական սնունդ:

Հոգևորականները հորդորում են Ամանորը դիմավորել եկեղեցում, խորհել հոգևոր վիճակի մասին և ստանալ Աստծո օրհնությունը:

Արարատյան Հայրապետական թեմի առաջնորդական փոխանորդ Տ. Նավասարդ արքեպիսկոպոս Կճոյանի տնօրինությամբ դեկտեմբերի 31-ի գիշերը Երևանի կենտրոնական և մեծ եկեղեցիները մինչև առավոտյան ժամը 2.00-ը բաց կլինեն:
