Քրիստոսի Ծնունդն ու Մկրտությունը Եկեղեցին տոնում է միասին` հունվարի 6-ին` «Հայտնություն» կամ «Աստվածահայտնություն» ընդհանուր անվամբ: Օրն անփոփոխ ու անխախտ նշվում է առաքելական ժամանակներից:

Քրիստոսի ծննդյան ժամանակաշրջանում Իսրայելը գտնվում էր Հռոմեական կայսրության իշխանության տակ: Օգոստոս կայսեր հրամանով կայսրությունում սկսվում է մարդահամար: Յուրաքանչյուր ոք պետք է գնար իր ծննդավայրը` գրանցվելու: Հովսեփը Ս. Կույս Մարիամի հետ Բեթղեհեմ եկավ, և ոչ մի պանդոկում գիշերելու տեղ չգտնվեց: Նրանք ստիպված մի քարայրում տեղավորվեցին: Այդ ժամանակ էր, որ Ս.Կույսի հղության օրերը լրացան, և Հիսուս ծնվեց մսուրում: Աստծո որդին` աշխարհի Արարիչն ու Փրկիչը ծնվեց մի անփառունակ քարայրում` աղքատության մեջ, որը մեր հոգիների ճշմարիտ խորհրդանշանն է:

Ս. Ծննդյան վկաները մոտակայքի հովիվներն էին, ում հրեշտակներն էին տեղեկացրել Փրկչի ծննդյան մասին` երգելով. «Փառք ի բարձունս Աստուծոյ, եւ յերկիր խաղաղութիւն, ի մարդիկ` հաճություն»: (Ղուկ. 2:14): Այնուհետև արևելքից մոգեր եկան, ում մի աստղ էր առաջնորդել: Նրանք երկրպագեցին Մանուկին, ընծաներ մատուցեցին ու գնացին իրենց երկրները: Ընծաներն իրենց հոգևոր խորհուրդն ունեին՝ ոսկին թագավորներին են մատուցում, ինչը խորհրդանշում է Հիսուսի երկնային թագավորությունը: Կնդրուկը խունկի ամենաանուշահոտ տեսակն է, որի նվիրելը խորհրդանշում է Հիսուսի քահանայապետ լինելը: Զմուռսը անուշահոտ նյութ է, որով պատում են մահացածներին և խորհրդանշում է Հիսուսի մահը:

Ուղիղ 30 տարի անց, երբ հրեական օրենքով տղամարդն իրավուքն էր ստանում հասարակական գործունեություն ծավալելու, Քրիստոս եկավ Հորդանան գետ` Ս. Հովհաննես Մկրտչի կողմից մկրտվելու: Ս. Հովհաննեսն իր քարոզներում մարդկանց մշտապես ասում էր, թե ինքը ջրով է մկրտում, սակայն շուտով գալու է Նա, ով հրով ու Ոգով է մկրտելու: Մկրտության ժամանակ էր, որ Հայր Աստված վկայեց, թե` «Դա է իմ սիրելի Որդին, որն ունի իմ ամբողջ բարեհաճությունը» (Մատթ. 3:17, Մարկ. 1:11, Ղուկ. 3:22) և Սուրբ հոգին աղավնակերպ իջավ Քրիստոսի վրա:
Մկրտության ժամանակ տեղի ունեցավ Քրիստոսի երկրորդ Աստվածահայտնությունը:

Հունվարի 6-ի առավոտյան մատուցվում է տոնական Ս.Պատարագ, որից հետո` կատարվում է Ջրօրհնեաց կարգ` ի հիշատակ Հիսուսի մկրտության: Խաչը ջուրն են իջեցնում և օրհնում, ինչպես Հիսուսն օրհնեց ջուրն իր մկրտությամբ: Պատարագիչ քահանան սրբալույս Մյուռոն է կաթեցնում ջրի մեջ և օրհնում այն: Ավանդության համաձայն`ժողովուրդն այդ ջրից տուն է տանում` որպես օրհնություն:

Ս. Ծննդյան տոնից հետո քահանաներն այցելում են հավատացյալների տները՝ ավետելու Հիսուս Քրիստոսի Ծնունդը՝ կատարելով Տնօրհնեքի արարողություն:
