Աշխարհի գործող չեմպիոն նորվեգացի Մագնուս Կառլսենը հաղթեց ֆրանսիացի Էթյեն Բակրոյին՝ դուրս գալով շախմատի Աշխարհի գավաթի խաղարկության կիսաեզրափակիչ: Մրցաշարը տեղի է ունենում Սոչիում:
Կարլսենը քառորդ եզրափակիչում երկու խաղերում էլ հաղթեց: Կիսաեզրափակիչում նրա մրցակիցը կլինի լեհ Յան-Քշիշտոֆ Դուդան, ով 1,5: 0,5 հաշվով հաղթեց հնդիկ Վիդիտ Գուջրատիին:
Կիսաեզրափակիչ դուրս եկավ նաև ռուս շախմատիստ Վլադիմիր Ֆեդոսեևը: Նա ավելի ուժեղ գտնվեց իրանցի Ամին Տաբատաբայից`1,5: 0,5:
Հինգշաբթի ռուս գրոսմայստեր Սերգեյ Կարյակինը հաղթեց ամերիկացի Սեմ Շենքլանդին և նրա հետ դիմակայությունը տեղափոխեց թայ-բրեյք: Այս դիմակայության հաղթողը կիսաեզրափակիչում կդառնա Ֆեդոսեևի մրցակիցը:
Տղամարդկանց աշխարհի առաջնությունը կավարտվի օգոստոսի 6-ին: Մրցաշարի ընդհանուր մրցանակային ֆոնդը 1.89 միլիոն դոլար է: Մրցաշարի լավագույն երկու շախմատիստները (բացառությամբ Կարլսենի) կստանան հավակնորդների մրցաշարի ուղեգրեր:
