«Փաստ» օրաթերթը գրում է.

Մարդիկ ժամանակը սկսել են չափել շատ վաղուց: Դրա համար օգտագործվել են ջուրը և արևի լույսը, հետագայում` ավազի հատիկները, ապա զսպանակների մեխանիկական ուժը, իսկ ներկայումս՝ պիեզոբյուրեղների տատանումները: Ինչ-որ փուլում ժամանակի չափման հիմնական գործիքը եղել է ավազի ժամացույցը: Ճշգրիտ հայտնի է, որ ավազի ժամացույցի գործողության սկզբունքը հայտնի է եղել Ասիայում դեռ մեր թվարկությունից առաջ: Սակայն հին աշխարհում, չնայած ապակե շշեր արդեն իսկ ստեղծել էին, բայց զանգվածային կերպով ավազի ժամացույցներ չեն ստեղծվել, չնայած կան որոշակի հիշատակություններ դրանց մասին: Եվրոպայում ավազի ժամացույցները հայտնվել են միջնադարում: Հաստատված է նաև այն փաստը, որ 14-րդ դարում ավազի ժամացույցներ ստեղծելու համար օգտագործել են մարմարի, կապարի կամ ցինկի փոշին, կվարցային ավազը, ինչպես նաև ձվի մանրացված կճեպը:

Որքան ավելի հարթ է եղել ապակին, այնքան բարձր է եղել ժամացույցի ճշգրտությունը: Դա կախված է եղել նաև ավազից, ինչպես նաև ժամացույցի ապակե անոթի ձևից: Ապակե անոթի մեջ տեղադրված դիաֆրագման հնարավորություն է տվել վերահսկել ավազի հատիկների քանակը և, համապատասխանաբար, թափման արագությունը: Ճիշտն ասած, այդ տարիներին արհեստավորները չեն կարողացել հասնել ժամացույցի ճշտության բարձր աստիճանի և երկարակեցության, քանի որ ժամանակի ընթացքում ավազահատիկները մանրացել են, իսկ թափման անցքը՝ մաշվելով մեծացել: Ավազի ժամացույցի չափման ժամային միջակայքը եղել է տարբեր, սովորաբար այն տատանվել է մի քանի վայրկյանից մինչև մեկ ժամ միջակայքում, ավելի քիչ դեպքերում՝ մի քանի ժամ: Այնուամենայնիվ, եղել են նաև բացառություններ, որոնք առկա են Բուդապեշտում (Հունգարիա) և Նիմում (Ճապոնիա): Այդ ժամացույցների բարձրություննը հասնում է մի քանի մետրի, իսկ դրանց չափման ցիկլը մեկ տարի է:

Երկար տարիներ նավերի վրա օգտագործվել են 30 վայրկյան ցիկլով ավազի ժամացույցներ, որոնք օգտագործվել են նավի արագությունը չափելու համար, եղել են նաև 30 րոպե ցիկլով աշխատող ժամացույցներ՝ նավավարների հերթափոխների համար: Դատական լսումների ընթացքում ևս օգտագործվել են 30 րոպե ցիկլային ավազի ժամացույցներ, իսկ բժշկության մեջ ընդունված է եղել 30 վայրկյանանոցը: Ավազի ժամացույցի պատմության մեջ դրանք բարելավելու բազմաթիվ փորձեր են եղել: Օրինակ՝ ստեղծվել են զսպանակային մեխանիզմներով դրանք շրջելու հարմարանքներ կամ ավազի հատիկները սնդիկով փոխարինելու փորձեր: Բայց այդ բոլոր նորամուծությունները չեն արմատավորվել, և ներկայիս ժամանակակից ավազի ժամացույցները նույնն են, ինչ եղել են դարեր առաջ:

Ներկայումս քչերն են ավազի ժամացույց օգտագործում ժամանակը չափելու համար, բայց, որպես խորհրդանիշ, շատերն են առնչվում դրան: Օրինակ՝ Microsoft Windows օպերացիոն համակարգի օգտագործողները դա տեսնում են յուրաքանչյուր բեռնման ժամանակ, երբ մկնիկի ցուցիչը պարզապես վերածվում է պտտվող ավազի ժամացույցի՝ ցույց տալով համակարգի զբաղվածությունը:
