Չբացահայտված ծովային առեղծվածը

Superior լիճը բավականին մեծ է և դրսևորում է ներքին լճի վարքագիծ իր փոթորիկներով: Այդպիսի մի փոթորիկ եղել է 1975թ. նոյեմբերին, երբ Էդմունդ Ֆիցջերալդի՝ հանքանյութեր տեղափոխող նավը ծով է դուրս եկել Դեթրոյթից: Մինչև հաջորդ առավոտը Ֆիցջերալդը և նավի նավապես Արթուր Անդերսոնը փոխել են երթուղին դեպի հյուսիս, քանի որ փորձել են պաշտպանել նավերն ու անձնակազմի անդամներին հզոր փոթորկից:
Ֆիցջերալդի նավապետներից մեկը հասկացել է, որ դա կանոնավոր փոթորիկ չէ և զեկուցել է մայրցամաքային հատուկ ծառայությանը, որ նավը վտանգված է: Նա փորձել է նավը շրջել դեպի Ուայթեֆիշ ծովածոց, որպեսզի հանի Ֆիցջերալդին վտանգավոր վիճակից: Ցավոք, ռադիոյով իր մասին տեղեկություններ հայտնելուց մի ժամ անց նավն անհետացել է ռադիոծածկույթից, չեն կարողացել հետևել կամ կապ հաստատել նավի հետ:
Հայտնաբերվել են միայն 2 խորտակված փրկանավակներ և մի փրկարարական ժիլետ ջրի երեսին: Մեկ շաբաթ անց Ֆիցջերալդի նավի բեկորները հայտնաբերվել են ջրում՝ 150 մ խորության տակ: Նավը մասնատվել էր, սակայն ոչ մի մարմին չի հայտնաբերվել: Պարզ է, որ փոթորիկն է վճռել նավի ճակատագիրը, բայց առեղծված է այն, թե ինչն է նավին վերջնականապես սուզել այդքան խորը և որտեղ են գտնվում անձնակազմի անդամների աճյունները:
40 տարի է՝ այս առեղծվածը չի բացահայտվել և սնահավատության պատճառ է դարձել: Փոխադրող նավերն այժմ մեծ ուշադրությամբ են հետևում եղանակային նորություններին և ոչ մի դեպքում չեն սկսում ճամփորդությունը, եթե փոթորկի վտանգ է լինում:
