Վեբ-տեսախցիկը թվային տեսա կամ ֆոտոխցիկ է, որը կարող է իրական ժամանակում պատկերներ ներբեռնել համացանցով հետագա փոխանցման համար: Վեբ-տեսախցիկի պատմությունը սկսվել է Քեմբրիջի համակարգչային լաբորատորիայում: Դա եղել է 1990-ականների սկզբին, երբ համացանցը նոր էր սկսել տարածվել մեր մոլորակի վրա: Ցանցային տեխնոլոգիաները վաղուց են հետաքրքրել մարդկանց, և 15-20 հոգուց բաղկացած գիտնականների մի խումբ աշխատել է այդ ոլորտում ծրագրեր ստեղծելու ուղղությամբ: 

Այդ խումբը ստիպված է եղել համակերպվել սպարտայական աշխատանքային պայմանների, դժվարություններ են ծագել անգամ սուրճ պատրաստելիս, քանի որ ամբողջ թիմի համար եղել է ընդամենը մեկ սրճեփ, իսկ դա չի կարողացել բավարարել ամբողջ թիմի կարիքները: Խումբը գլխավոր աշխատանքն իրականացրել է լաբորատորիաներում, ընդ որում, բոլորն էլ բնակվել են աշխատավայրում՝ շենքի մեկ այլ հատվածում:

 Որպեսզի թարմանան մեկ գավաթ սուրճով, հետազոտական ծրագրի մասնակիցները ստիպված են եղել լաբորատորիաներից բարձրանալ մեկ հարկ վերևում գտնվող սենյակ, որտեղ գտնվում էր սուրճի պատրաստման մեքենան: Բայց այդպիսի «արշավները» ոչ հաճախ են հաջողոթյամբ պսակվել, քանի որ երբեմն գործընկերները նրանցից շուտ են սպառել ցանկալի հեղուկի մնացորդները: Պետք էր ելք գտնել այդ իրավիճակից, և այն գտնվեց: 

Լաբորատորիայի համակարգիչներից մեկում եղել է տեսազավթման սարք (frame grabber): Եվ այդ համակարգչին է միացվել տեսախցիկ, որն ուղղված է եղել դեպի դիտարկման օբյեկտը՝ սրճեփը: Վեբ սերվերի դերը խաղացել է հենց նույն համակարգիչը իր ծրագրային ապահովմամբ, որի համար հատուկ այդ նպատակով ծրագիր է գրվել: 

Պարզելու համար, թե արդյո՞ք սրճեփի մեջ սուրճ կա, պարզապես անհրաժեշտ է եղել սեփական համակարգչում գործարկել հաճախորդի ծրագրակազմը, որի միջոցով կապ է հաստատվում սերվերի հետ: Հետո համակարգչի մի փոքրիկ պատուհանում հայտնվել է սևսպիտակ տեսապատկեր, որը րոպեում երեք անգամ թարմացվել է: 

1992 թվականի հունվարին «Comm-Week» ամսագիրը հրատարակել է հոդված այդ հետաքրքիր համակարգի մասին և դրանով իսկ ստեղծագործելու նյութ ապահովել համակարգչային տեխնիկա արտադրողների համար: 

1996 թվականին EarthCam ընկերությունը սկսել է ստեղծել վեբ-տեսախցիկների ցանց, որպեսզի աշխարհը ցույց տա իրական ժամանակում: Սկզբում տեսախցիկները ցուցադրել են լուսանկարներ, այնուհետև փոխարկվել են տեսանյութերի: 

Ցանցային այլ տեխնոլոգիաների նման, վեբ-տեսախցիկներն ու տեսաչաթերն սկսել են ժողովրդականություն վայելել: Վեբ-տեսախցիկների առաջին նախատիպերի հայտնվելուց մինչ հիմա շատ ժամանակ չի անցել: Այնուամենայնիվ, այդ սարքերը դարձել են համակարգչային աքսեսուարների առանձին դաս, նրանց շնորհիվ մեր առօրյա կյանքը դարձել է շատ ավելի պարզ ու անհամեմատ հարմարավետ:
