Վերելակը ընդհատ գործողության ստացիոնար վերհան է, որի խցիկը կամ պլատֆորմը շարժվում է ուղղաձիգ հորանում տեղադրված կոշտ ուղղորդիչներով։ Հսկայական թվով մարդիկ են այսօր բնակվում բարձրահարկ շենքերում և ամեն օր օգտագործում են վերելակը: Առանց դրա կյանքը, օրինակ՝ տասներորդ հարկում, հազիվ թե հարմարավետ լիներ: Վերելակի գյուտի պատմությունը սկսվել է հին ժամանակներից: 

Որոշ պատմաբաններ կարծում են, որ մեքենաներ, որոնք բարձրացնում են մարդկանց, գոյություն են ունեցել դեռևս Հին Հռոմում: Որոշ գիտնականներ կարծում են, որ առաջին բարձրացնող մեխանիզմը հայտնվել է Եգիպտոսի Սինայի վանքում: Սրանք բոլորը ենթադրություններ են: Այնուամենայնիվ, որոշակիորեն հայտնի է, որ 1743 թվականին Լուի 15-րդի ժամանակ Վերսալի պալատում եղել է վերելակ: 18-րդ դարի վերջին Կուլիբինը հորինել է «բարձրացնող աթոռները», որոնք օգտագործվել են Սանկտ Պետերբուրգի Ձմեռային պալատում: 

Իհարկե, պետք է հաշվի առնել, որ նշված բոլոր այդ վերամբարձ սարքերը աշխատել են մարդկանց կամ կենդանիների ֆիզիկական ուժի օգնությամբ: Իրավիճակը փոխվել է շոգեշարժիչի գյուտից հետո, որն սկսել է կիրառվել ամբարձիչ մեխանիզմներում: Բոլոր ժամանակակից վերելակների պարտադիր տարրը ավտոմատ բռնիչն է, որը արգելակում է վերելակը, եթե մալուխը չի դիմանում և կտրվում է: 

Բարձրացնող մեխանիզմների մեջ բռնիչ օգտագործելու գաղափարը պատկանում է ամերիկացի Էլայեշ Գրեվիս Օտիսին: Լինելով մահճակալներ արտադրող կահույքի գործարանի աշխատող՝ նա համաձայն պատվերի ստեղծել է սարք, որը տախտակները բարձրացնում է երկրորդ հարկ: Ինքը`Օտիսը, իր գյուտն անվանել է «անվտանգ վերելակ»: Հետագայում նա ստեղծել է իր սեփական արտադրամասը, որն արտադրել է բարձրացնող նման մեխանիզմներ: 

Մի քանի տարի անց Օտիսը իր գյուտը վերածել է ուղևորափոխադրիչ վերելակի, որը 1857 թվականին տեղադրվել է «Բրոդվեյ» առևտրի կենտրոնի հինգ հարկանի շենքում: Վերելակի արագությունը եղել է 0,2 մ/վ և նախատեսված է եղել հինգ մարդու համար: Օտիսն իր վերելակներում օգտագործել է շոգեշարժիչներ: 

Դրանից երկու տարի անց՝ 1859 թվականին, Otis ընկերությունը հյուրանոցում տեղադրել է իր առաջին պտուտակային վերելակը: 

Վերելակի պատմությունը զարգացել է Փարիզում, և 1867 թվականին ստեղծվել է հիդրավլիկ վերելակը: Էլեկտրական վերելակները հայտնվել են 1880-ական թվականներին Գերմանիայում: «Siemens Halske» ընկերությունը սկսել է արտադրել վերելակներ, որոնք ունակ են բարձրանալ 22 մետր ընդամենը 11 վայրկյանում: Ներկայումս առկա են 320-2400 կիլոգրամ բեռնունակությամբ մարդատար (սովորական, արագընթաց, հիվանդանոցային) և մինչև 10 տոննա բեռնունակությամբ բեռնատար (ընդհանուր նշանակման և հատուկ) վերելակներ, որոնց արագությունը 0,5-4 մետր վայրկյան է (եզակի կոնստրուկցիաներում՝ 7 մետր վայրկյան):
