Հնագույն մարդիկ իրենց բնակատեղիներում հատակը ծածկել են վայրի կենդանիների մորթիներով, որոնք, ըստ էության, առաջին անկողնային պարագաների նախատիպերն են: Որոշ ժամանակ անց անկողիններն սկսել են ծածկվել ծղոտով, բամբակով կամ կենդանիների մազերով: Իհարկե, նման «մահճակալի» վրա քնելն անհարմար էր: Հին հռոմեացիները առաջինն են եղել, որ սկսել են գործվածքներն օգտագործել որպես անկողնային պարագաներ: 

Այնուամենայնիվ, դա իրեն կարող էր թույլ տալ միայն շատ մեծ եկամուտ ունեցողը: 

Այդ ժամանակ հավատալիք կար, որ ծաղիկների և մրգերի պատկերներով մահճակալի վրա քնելը լավ է առողջության համար, քանի որ այն տալիս է էներգիա և սեր: Եվրոպայում անկողնային սպիտակեղենի պատմությունը սկսվում է 14- րդ դարում ՝ Վերածննդի դարաշրջանով:

 Սակայն, ինչպես և Հին Հռոմում, այդ ժամանակ Եվրոպայում էլ էր այն շատ թանկ: Սպիտակեղենը, որպես կանոն, լինում էր սպիտակ և ասեղնագործ նախշերով ու ժանյակներով զարդարված: Իտալիայում անկողնային սպիտակեղենը սկսել է ժողովրդականություն վայելել սկսած 15-րդ դարից: 

Հենց այդ ժամանակ էլ, անկողնային սպիտակեղենից բացի, սկսել են հայտնվել սրբիչները, սփռոցները և անձեռոցիկները: 16-րդ դարի Հոլանդիայում մոդայիկ է դարձել սպիտակեղենի վրա ասեղնագործել այն կարած արհեստավորի անունը, ինչպես նաև այն ստեղծելու տարածքի անվանումը:

 Պատվիրատուի խնդրանքով ասեղնագործվել է նաև տիրոջ անունը: 17-րդ դարում վուշե և մետաքսե սպիտակեղենի հիմնական արտադրությունը տեղակայված է եղել Ամստերդամում: 18-րդ դարի վերջին անկողնային սպիտակեղենի և այլ գործվածքների գները նվազել են այնքան, որ արդեն միջին եկամուտ ունեցող մարդը կարող էր իրեն թույլ տալ նման ճոխություն: 

Այդ ժամանակահատվածում արտադրության առաջատար է դարձել Սաքսոնիան: Ժամանակի ընթացքում բարելավվել է նաև սպիտակեղենի որակը, այն դարձել է ավելի բարակ, փափուկ ու ավելի նուրբ: 18-րդ դարի վերջին թանկարժեք սպիտակեղենը զարդարվել է դրեզդենյան ժանյակներով և Ռոկոկոյի ասեղնագործություններով: 19-րդ դարում Ռոկոկոյի ասեղնագործությունը փոխարինվել է այլ նորաձևությամբ` սպիտակ ասեղնագործությամբ: 

Այն հատկապես հայտնի է դարձել Շվեյցարիայում: 20-րդ դարի սկզբին նորաձև է դարձել սպիտակեղենը զարդարել սպիտակ ծաղկեփնջերի ասեղնագործությամբ, բացի այդ, ազնվականները սկսել են պատվիրել, որ դրանց վրա լինեն իրենց զինանշանները, վիմպելները և մոնոգրամները: 

Ինչպես բարձերն ու վերմակները, այնպես էլ անկողնային սպիտակեղենը եղել է հարսնացուի օժիտի պարտադիր բաղադրիչը: Ավելին, յուրաքանչյուր մահճակալի համար պետք է լիներ առնվազն երեք կոմպլեկտ սպիտակեղեն: Այսօր արտադրողները առաջարկում են անկողնային սպիտակեղենի հսկայական ընտրություն՝ տարբեր գույների, ձևերի և չափերի: 

Սպիտակեղենը նաև պատրաստվում է տարբեր գործվածքներից` կալիկո, ատլաս, բամբակ, սատին, ֆլանել, պոլիեսթեր և այլն: 

Այնուամենայնիվ, բնական նյութերից պատրաստված անկողնային սպիտակեղենը առավել արժեքավոր է, որը թույլ է տալիս մարդու մաշկին շնչել և հիանալի կլանում է քրտինքն ու ճարպը: Անկասկած, շատ հաճելի և հարմարավետ է նման սպիտակեղենի վրա քնելը, թեկուզ հիմա էլ այն առանձնապես էժան չէ:
