Հնդկաստանի Հանրապետությունը նոյեմբերի 26-ին տոնում է իր Սահմանադրության օրը: Ուղիղ 66 տարի առաջ այս օրը Հնդկաստանի Սահմանադիր ժողովն ընդունեց երկրի Սահմանադրությունը, որի համաձայն` Հնդկաստանը հռչակվեց հանրապետություն: «Հարգանքի տուրք մատուցելով անկախ Հնդկաստանի Սահմանադրության հեղինակ դոկտոր Բիմրաո Ռամջի Ամբեդկարին` Հնդկաստանի կառավա րությունը նոյեմբերի 26-ը հռչակել է «Սահմանադրության օր», և այս օրը պաշտոնապես նշվելու է թե երկրի ներսում, թե նրա սահմաններից դուրս»,-հայտնում է Հայաստանում Հնդկաստանի դեսպանատունը:

Հնդկական Սահմանադրության գլխավոր կերտողն է համարվում Բիմրաո Ռամջի Ամբեդկարին` սահմանադրության մեջ ունեցած իր մնայուն ներդրումի համար: 1949-ին ընդունված սահմանադրությունը, որն ուժի մեջ մտել 1950 թվականի 26-ին, ուղղված էր երկիրը անկախ, սոցիալիստական, աշխարհիկ և ինքնավար հանրապետություն դարձնելուն` հնդիկ քաղաքացիների համար ապահովելով արդարություն, հավասարություն, ազատություն և միասնություն:

Հնդկաստանի նման բազմազգ պետության համար, որտեղ բնակվում են հինդուստանցիներ,տելուգուներ (անդհրաներ), մարաթիներ, բենգալացիներ, բիկարցիներ,թամիլներ, գուջարաթներ, կաննարաններ, մալայացիներ, փենջաբցիներ և այլք, անհրաժեշտ էր սահմանադրությամբ սահմանել յուրահատուկ կառավարման ձև: Սահմանադիր ժողովից պահանջվեց 2 տարի, 11 ամիս և 17 օր այն մշակելու և ընդունելու համար:

Հնդկաստանի Հանարապետության սահմանադրությամբ երկրում նախատեսվում է խորհրդարանական կառավարման ձև, որը կառուցվածքով դաշնային է` որոշակի միութենական առանձնահատկություններով: Միության գործադիր մարմնի սահմանադրական ղեկավարը նախագահն է: Սահմանադրության 79-րդ հոդվածի համաձայն` խորհրդարանի միության խորհուրդը կազմված է նախագահից և երկու պալատներից` Նահանգների խորհրդից (Ռաջյա Սաբհա) և Ժողովրդական պալատից (Լոկ Սաբհա): Գործադիր իշխանությունը պատկանում է նախարարների խորհրդին, որը գլխավորում է վարչապետը:

Սահմանադրության 7-րդ (1) հոդվածի համաձայն` նախարարների խորհուրդը, վարչապետի գլխավորությամբ, աջակցում և խորհուրդ է տալիս նախագահին, որն էլ խորհրդի համաձայն իրականացնում է իր գործառույթները:

Սահմանդրության ընդունմամբ Հնդկաստանի քաղաքացիներին տրվեց նոր` սահմանադրական, գիտական, ինքնավար և ժամանակակից Հնդկաստան` խաղաղության, կայունության և առաջընթացի տեսլականով:
