1940 թվականի նոյեմբերի 24-ին բացվել է Երևանի կենդանաբանական այգին

Երևանի կենդանաբանական այգու ստեղծման գաղափարը տանում է 20-րդ դարի 30-ական թվականները, բայց այն իրականություն է դառնում միայն 1940-ին`ՀԽՍՀ Գերագույն խորհրդի որոշմամբ: Ի վերջո 3 հեկտար տարածության վրա հիմնվում է Երևանի կենդանաբանական այգին: Սկզբնական շրջանում կենդանաբանական այգում միայն 2 տասնյակ կենդանիներ ու թռչուններ էին, որոնք ձեռք էին բերվել Երևանում անցկացվող 12-րդ պետական կենդանաբանական ցուցահանդեսում:
1941-45թթ. այգու առջև խնդիր դրվեց պահպանել կենդանատեսակների կազմը և սկսել այգու կապիտալ շինարարությունը: 1945-46թթ. այգին ուներ 32 տեսակի 179 գլուխ կենդանի: Անգամ պատերազմի տարիներին, երբ միջոցները չափազանց սուղ էին, Մոսկվան մշտապես իր ուշադրության կենտրոնում էր պահում Երևանի կենդանաբանական այգին՝ մեծ գումարներ տրամադրելով այգու վերակառուցման համար: 1954-ին այգին ուներ 332 գլուխ կենդանի (թե քանի տեսակ է եղել չի պահպանվել), որից 95-ը ձեռք էր բերվել նույն թվականին: 1954 թվականին, այգին կանաչազարդելու նպատակով, տնկվել է մոտ 2500 դեկորատիվ ծառ, թուփ և մոտ 3000 տեսակի սածիլ: Սակայն այգու համար լուրջ խնդիր էր շարունակում մնալ ոռոգման ջուրը, ինչի պատճառով նորատունկ ծառերի զգալի մասը չորացել էր: Նույն թվականին այգում աշխատել է 104 բանվոր-ծառայող, գործել է այգու գիտամեթոդական բաժինը: Իսկ այգու բաժինների վարիչների գիտամակարդակը բարձրացնելու նպատակով, վերջիններս պարբերաբար մասնակցել են ինստիտուտում անցկացվող գիտական սեմինարներին: 1954-ին այգին ուներ 4 բաժին՝ սմբակավորների, գիշատիչների, թռչունների, սողունների: 1980թ-ին Երևանի կենդանաբանական այգին արդեն ուներ 350 տեսակի կենդանի (գլխաքանակը չի նշվում), սակայն 1990 թվականների սկզբներին այն նվազել է 90-ով:
