Ջրային լորտուն լորտուների ենթաընտանիքի իսկական լորտունների ցեղի օձ է։ Նրա մարմնի երկարությունը տարիքի հետ փոխվում է (14-140 սմ), պոչը 5-6 անգամ կարճ է։ Մարմինը բարեկազմ է, գլուխը մարմնից տարանջատված է՝ ծածկված խոշոր, փայլուն վահանիկներով։ Աչքերը խոշոր են, ծիածանաթաղանթը՝ դեղնավուն, բիբը՝ կլոր։ Մարմնի թեփուկները կատարավոր են, ինչով կարող է նմանվել թունավոր իժերին։ Մեջքը մոխրագույն է, գորշավուն, կանաչավուն կամ կարմրավուն՝ ծածկված այս կամ այն չափով արտահայտված շախմատանման մուգ բծերով, որոնք միաձուլվելով՝ տալիս են ընդհանուր սև գունավորում։ Որովայնային մակերեսը խայտաբղետ է. վահանիկների եզրերը դեղնավունից նարնջագույն են կամ վառ վարդագույն, կենտրոնական մասով անցնում է մանր կետիկներից բաղկացած լայն, սև շերտ։
