Բրիտանական The Independent պարբերականն անդրադարձել է Եվրոպայի մարզական հանրության շրջանակում ամենաշատ քննարկվող թեմաներից մեկին՝ «Արսենալ» ակումբի կիսապաշտպան Հենրիխ Մխիթարյանի՝ Եվրոպայի լիգայի եզրափակիչ հանդիպման համար Բաքու չմեկնելու որոշմանը:

«Հայազգի կիսապաշտպանի՝ Հայաստանի և Ադրբեջանի միջև շարունակվող հակամարտության հետ կապված անվտանգության մտավախությունների պատճառով կարևոր հանդիպումը բաց թողնելու որոշումը «Արսենալ»-ի երկրպագուներին, բրիտանական մեդիային, քաղաքական գործիչներին և մեկնաբաներին իրարանցման մեջ է գցել: Բայց արդյո՞ք Արևմտյան Եվրոպան իրապես հասկանում է  նրա որոշման պատճառը, այն, որ դա կապված է Հարավային Կովկասում լարվածության հետ: Հիասթափեցնող է, որ Ունայ Էմերիի անկեղծ խոստովանությունն առ այն, որ ինքն «իսկապես գլուխ չի հանում քաղաքականությունից», կարող է կիրառելի լինել նաև Եվրոպայի արտգործնախարարների դեպքում: Համայնքների պալատում Թոմ Ուոթսոնն ու Ջերեմի Ռայթը համաձայնեցին, որ եզրափակչին ներկա գտվելու ցանկություն ունեցող հայկական ազգանուններով անձանց նկատմամբ խտրական վերաբերմունքը ստվերում է գեղեցիկ խաղի հեղինակությունը: Սակայն մտահոգության այս բավական փուչ (նույնիսկ եթե անկեղծ) արտահայտման ներքո Մխիթարյանի գործում ուրվագծվում է բավական լուրջ քաղաքական հարց. ի՞նչ պետք է արվի Եվրոպայի և Ասիայի հատման գծում գտնվող ամենախորքային արմատավորված էթնիկ հակամարտություններից մեկի հարցում»,-գրում է պարբերականը՝ նկատելով, որ հայերն ու ադրբեջանցիները, որպես կանոն, հյուրասեր ժողովուրդներ են, սակայն երբ գործը հասնում է իրար մեջ «լեզու գտնելուն» այդ հյուրասիրությունն ավարտվում է:

Այնուհետև The Independent-ը պատմական համատեքստում ներկայացնում է  հայ-ադրբեջանական բարդ փոխհարաբերությունները, հիշատակում է Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը, արցախյան հիմնախնդրի պատմությունը, Սումգայիթում հայկական ջարդերը:

«Մխիթարյանի հետ կապված դեպքի հանրայնացումը լույս է սփռել այս քիչ հասկացված հակամարտության վրա, ուստի՝ Եվրոպան պետք է նոր թափ հաղորդի Բաքվի և Երևանի միջև միջնորդական ջանքերին: Կարճ ասած՝ Մխիթարյանի դեպքն ու Եվրոպայի եզրափակիչը չպետք է այս տարածաշրջանի և դրա ժողովուրդների նկատմամբ անտարբերության բացառություն լինեն, ինչը բնորոշ է Արևմտյան Եվրոպայի քաղաքական գործիչներին: Եվրոպայի նպատակը պետք է  խաղաղ բանակցային գործընթացի նոր ինտենսիվացումը լինի»,-եզրափակել է աղբյուրը:
