LIFEԵս շատ ծանր ծննդաբերություն էի ունեցել: Աստիճանաբար ապաքինվում էի: Որդիս հարևան սենյակում էր: Ես անհամբեր սպասում էի, թե երբ պիտի ոդդուս հետ տուն գնամ: Ինձ հետ նույն հիվանդասենյակում էր գտնվում 17-ամյա Անյան: Նա հղիացել էր այն բանից հետո, երբ մի խումբ ստահակներ նրան դաժանաբար բռնաբարել էին: Անյան մի կերպ էր ողջ մնացել և երբ իմացել էր, որ հղի է ցանկացել էր վերջ տալ կյանքին. կտրել էր երակները: Բարեբախտաբար մյարը շուտ էր տուն վերադարձել աշխատանքից և աղջկան հասցրել էին փրկել: Ծննդատանը նա իրեն զգում էր ինչպես կառափնարանում, հրաժարվում էր տեսնել ու կերակրել երեխային, ճչում էր. «Հեռու տարեք այդ տականքին, ես նրան տեսնել չեմ ուզում»: Իսկ փոքրիկ հրեշտակը շարունակ ժպտում էր ու չէր պատկերացնում, որ իրեն վիճակված է որբ լինել: Ես փորձում էի հանգստացնել Անյային, ասում էի, որ երեխան ոչ մի բանում մեղավոր չէ: Բայց նա լսել չէր ուզում; Նրա ծնողները ևս չէին ուզում լսել երեխայի մասին: Ու մի օր էլ նա դուրս եկավ հիվանդասենյակից ու այլևս չվերադարձավ:
Եկավ իմ ու որդուս դուրս գրվելու օրը, ես չէի կարող հիվանդանոցից գնալ առանց հրաժեշտ տալու Մաշենկային (ես նրան այդպես էի անվանել): Նրան նույնպես դուրս էին գրում ու պիտի տանեին մանկատուն: Սիրտս կտոր-կտոր էր լինում, երբ պատկերացնում էի այդ փոքրիկին մի վայրում, որտեղ չկա քնքշանք, սեր: Եվ ես որոշեցի, որ չեմ հեռանա առանց նրա:
Մաշան ինձ համար եղավ ճակատագրի նվեր: Նա մի հրաշք աղջիկ է, դպրոցն ավարտեց ոսկե մեդալով, ընդունվեց համալսարան և երազում է բժիշկ դառնալ: Եվ նույնիսկ չեմ ուզում պատկերացնել, թե ինչպես կդասավորվեր Մաշենկայի կյանքը, եթե ես նրան թողնեի հիվանդանոցում:
