«Երկաթյա վարագույր» արտահայտությոնը պատկանում է Մեծ Բրիտանիայի վարչապետ Ուինսթոն Չերչիլին, երբ 1946 թվականի մարտի 5–ին ԱՄՆ–ի Միսսուրի նահանգի Վեստմինստերյան քոլեջում, բացատրելով ֆաշիզմին հաղթած երկրների միջև ծագած և զարգացող տարաձայնությունները, նա ասել է. «Սկսած Բալթիկ ծովում գտնվող Շտետինից, մինչև Ադրիատիկում գտնվող Տրիեստա՝ ամբողջ Եվրոպայով մեկ իջեցվել է երկաթյա վարագույր»: 

Իրականում այդպես չէ:

Պարզվում է՝ «երկաթյա վարագույր» արտահայտությունը մինչև Ուինսթոն Չերչիլը այլ քաղաքական գործիչներ էլ են օգտագործել: Ուղղակի այն ժամանակ «սառը պատերազմը» նոր–նոր էր սկսվել, և այդ հիշվող բառերը արտատպվեցին բոլոր առաջատար թերթերի հոդվածների գլխագրերում: Արդյունքում «երկաթյա վարագույր» արտահայտությունը սխալմամբ վերագրվում է Չերչիլին: Չերչիլը «երկաթե վարագույր» ասելով՝ նկատի է ունեցել տեղեկատվական, քաղաքական և սահմանային այն արգելքը, որը ԽՍՀՄ–ն ու սոցիալիստական ճամբարի պետություններին մեկուսացրել է կապիտալիստական պետություններից: Մեկուսացման այս քաղաքականությունը ունեցել է փոխադարձ բնույթ: Ըստ արևմտյան մամուլի, վարագույրը ստեղծել է Խորհրդային Միությունն իր ինքնամեկուսացման քաղաքականության շրջանակներում, իսկ ըստ խորհրդային մամուլի, երկաթե վարագույրը ԽՍՀՄ–ը մեկուսացնելու արևմտյան քաղաքականության արդյունքն է: Իրականում «երկաթյա վարագույր» արտահայտությունը առաջին անգամ օգտագործել է Բելգիայի թագուհի Ելիզավետան 1914 թվականին: Բանն այն է, որ այն ժամանակ սկսվել էր Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմը, գերմանական բանակը հարձակվում էր, և այդ առիթով Ելիզավետան ասել է. «Այժմ իմ և Գերմանիայի միջև, կարծես թե, «երկաթյա վարագույր» է ընկած»: Դրանից հետո 1917 թվականին այս արտահայտությունը օգտագործել է ռուս փիլիսոփա Վասիլի Ռոզանովը, որը Հոկտեմբերյան հեղափոխության դեպքերը համեմատել է թատերական ներկայացման հետ, որից հետո «ճռռալով» ռուսական պետության վրա է իջել երկաթե հսկայական վարագույրը՝ նկատի առնելով ԽՍՀՄ–ի ինքնամեկուսացումը այն տարիներին: Հետագայում՝ 1919 թվականին, Բեռլինում անգլիական դեսպան Ժորժ Կլեմանսոյը այսպես է բացատրել նախատեսվող փոխադարձ չհարձակվելու պայմանագրի կնքումը ֆրանսիացիների և գերմանացիների միջև. «Ես մնում եմ այն կարծիքին, որ լավագույն պաշտպանությունը ինչպես ֆրանսիացիների, այնպես էլ գերմանացիների համար կարող է դառնալ երկաթյա վարագույրը: Այսինքն, ես նկատի ունեմ այնպիսի չեզոք գոտին, որը խախտել ոչ մեկը չի համարձակվի: Ընդ որում, նման երկաթյա վարագույր կարող է դառնալ Լա Մանշ նեղուցը»:

1945 թվականի փետրվարի 8–ին գերմանական «Դաս Ռայխ» թերթում լույս է տեսնում «Երկաթյա վարագույրից այն կողմ» վերնագրով հոդված, իսկ նույն տարվա փետրվարի 25–ին նույն թերթը հրատարակում է Գերմանիայի քարոզչության նախարար Յոզեֆ Գեբելսի ճառը, որտեղ նա երկու անգամ հիշատակում է «Ռուսաստանի և Գերմանիայի միջև առկա երկաթյա վարագույր» արտահայտությունը: Ամենահավանականը, հավանաբար, այն է, որ Չերչիլը «երկաթյա վարագույր» արտահայտությունը վերցրել է հենց Գեբելսի այս ճառից: 

Ի դեպ, «երկաթյա վարագույրը» ներկայումս էլ է արդիական: Եվ այն արդիական է նաև մեզ համար: Արդեն 25 տարուց ավելի է, որ Ադրբեջանի և Հայաստանի միջև այդ «երկաթյա վարագույրն» է: Ցավոք, մեր դեպքում այն այնքան էլ երկաթյա չէ, քանի որ փոխադարձ կրակոցներ և զոհեր են լինում:
