Աշխարհի չեմպիոնի հավակնորդ, ամերիկացի Ֆաբիանո Կարուանան մոտ էր հաղթանակին, սակայն միջնախաղում թույլ տվեց մեկ սխալ, որից օգտվեց նորվեգացի Կարլսենն ու 38-րդ քայլին պարտիան ավարտվեց խաղաղ ելքով:
