Մենք գիտենք, որ...

Ութոտնուկը ունի ութ ոտք, ինչից և առաջացել է նրա անունը։

Իրականում այդպես չէ։ Ութոտնուկը ունի երկու ոտք, ինչպես և մարդը։

Ութոտնուկը ցեֆալոպոդ է՝ գլխոտանի, այսինքն՝ իրան չունի, գլխից աճում է ութ շոշափուկ։ Գիտնականները, ուսումնասիրելով ութոտնուկի վարքը և այն, թե ինչ նպատակով է նա օգտագործում իր շոշափուկները, եկան այն եզրակացության, որ հետին երկու շոշափուկով նա տեղաշարժվում է, իսկ մնացած վեցով՝ ուտում, այսինքն՝ այդ վեցը ձեռքերն են։

Ութոտնուկի շոշափուկները ուղղակի հրաշք են. կարող են ձգվել, պտտվել, լայնանալ և գլուխը ծածկել այնպես, որ կենդանին նմանվի կոկոսի, ունեն երկու շարք ծծիչներ, որոնք ունեն համի ընկալիչներ՝ սնունդը ճիշտ ընտրելու համար։ Ութոտնուկի ուղեղի երկու երրորդը գտնվում է շոշափուկների մեջ։ Գլխում միայն մի բլիթի չափ ուղեղիկ է։ Շնորհիվ դրա, շոշափուկները կարծես թե յուրահատուկ ինքնուրույնություն ունեն։

Արու ութոտնուկները ունեն նաև իններորդ շոշափուկ, այն կոչվում է գեկտոկոտիլ և հանդիսանում է արուի սեռական օրգանը։ Այդ «ձեռքում» նա պահում է սերմնահեղուկը և հանդիպելով էգին՝ ձեռքը մտցնում է նրա գլխի համապատասխան ճեղքը և բեղմնավորում։ Բեղմնավորելուց հետո այն կտրվում է, իսկ հաջորդ տարի նորից աճում։ Հետաքրքիր է, որ ութոտնուկի բեղմնավորման այս ձևը առաջին անգամ նկարագրել  է Արիստոտելը, բայց նրան ոչ մեկը չէր հավատում։ Կենդանաբան Ժորժ Կյուվեն 19–րդ դարում հայտնաբերեց այս պրոցեսը և սեռական օրգանին տվեց իր անունը՝ գեկտոկոտիլ (հունարենից թարգմանաբար նշանակում է հարյուր փոքրիկ բաժակներ)։

Երբեմն պատահում է, որ ութոտնուկը ուտում է սեփական շոշափուկներից մեկը. առաջ կարծում էին, թե դա սթրեսի հետևանք է, իսկ հիմա հաստատված է, որ դրա պատճառն այն է, որ այդ շոշափուկի ներվային համակարգը վարակված է լինում պաթոգեն վիրուսով։ Այսպես ասած՝ ութոտնուկը իր ոտքը ամպուտացիա է անում։
