Թմրաքունի վիճակը բնութագրվում է կենտրոնական նյարդային համակարգի (ԿՆՀ) հետադարձելի արգելակմամբ, գիտակցության անջատմամբ, զգայականության (առաջին հերթին ցավային) և ռեֆլեքսային ռեակցիաների ճնշմամբ, կմախքային մկանների ակտիվության անկմամբ։ Թմրաքունի միջոցները ճնշում են միջնեյրոնային(սինապտիկ) արթնացման փոխանցումը ԿՆՀ-ում։ Այդ դեպքում խանգարվում է աֆֆերենտալ իմպուլսների փոխանցումը, փոփոխվում են գլխուղեղի կեղևը, միջանկյալ ուղեղի գործառույթը, միջնուղեղի, ողնուղեղի և սինապտիկ փոխանցման խախտմամբ, և խթանում թմրաքունի զարգացմանը։
