Բազե 2017-ում Սերժ Սարգսյանը հարցուպատասխանի ժամանակ ասել է հետևյալը ՝ «Մենք բանակցում էինք և՛ Եվրասիական տնտեսական միության հետ, և՛ Եվրամիության հետ, որովհետև իսկզբանե երկու կողմն էլ ասում էին, որ մեկը մյուսին չի խանգարի»: Նախքան Մաքսային միություն մտնելու որոշում կայացնելը, 2013թ. մարտ ամսին էլ Սերժ Սարգսյանը հայտարարում էր այլ բան ՝ «Մի բան ձեզ պետք է ասեմ՝ մի հավատացեք բոլոր այն մարդկանց, հանդես գան նրանք լրատվամիջոցներում, թե հանրահավաքներում, խոհանոցներում, թե թատրոններում, միեւնույն է, մի հավատացեք նրանց, ովքեր ասում են, որ ռուսները մեզ պարտադրում են դառնալ Մաքսային միության անդամ: Չկա այդպիսի բան: Որքա՞ն կարելի է կրկնել: Մենք հակառակը կարող ենք ասել՝ Մաքսային միության անդամները դեռեւս ցանկություն չունեն որեւէ մեկին ներգրավելու, գոնե մեր մասով ես չեմ տեսել այդպիսի ցանկություն: Ես չեմ կարող չէ՞, հենց այնպես խոսել, որովհետեւ ես իմ մտածածների մասին չեմ ասում, ես ասում եմ բանակցությունների մասին, ասում եմ իրականության մասին»:

Ստացվում է, որ Սերժ Սարգսյանը մոռացել է ինչ է ասել Մաքսային միություն մտնելուց առաջ: Եվ այն ինչ ասում է հիմա նախորդ ասվածի հակառակն է: Բնականաբար սա նորություն չէ և ռուսական կողմը ճնշել է Հայաստանին մտնել Մաքսային միություն, ավելին՝ դա արել է ոչ մեկ գիշերում: Այսինքն եղել են բանակցություններ, որտեղ, ըստ Սերժ Սարգսյանի, թե ռուսական կողմը, թե Եվրոպան պնդել են, որ մեկը մյուսին չեն խանգարելու:

Եվ սա այն դեպքում, երբ թե Սարգսյանը, թե ՀՀԿ-ականները առիթը բաց չէին թողնում հիմնավորելու Մաքսային միություն մտնելու որոշման հեռատեսությունն ու արդյունավետությունը, միաժամանակ ժխտելով ռուսական ճնշումների մասին պնդումները: Նույնն անում են հիմա, երբ ԱՄՆ դեսպանը կոչ է անում ինքնիշխան որոշումներ կայացնել: 

Ռուսական ճնշման մասին, սակայն, իշխանությունները երբեք չեն խոստովանի, որովհետև ստիպված կլինեն բացահայտել ոչ միայն ճնշման հիմք հանդիսացող փաստարկները, այլև կցուցադրեն իրենց թուլությունը: Իսկ ենթադրյալ ուժի ազդեցությունը մնացել է միակ գործիքը, որ պատնեշում է հասարակությանը իշխանությունից ու պահպանում վերջինիս լեգիտիմությունը:
