Ավելորդ քաշն ու մարմնի զանգվածի բարձր ինդեքսը սրտի իշեմիկ հիվանդության եւ մի շարք այլ հիվանդությունների զարգացման վտանգի գործոն են համարվում: Սակայն, պարզվում է, նիհար լինելը նույնպես մարդուն առողջ չի դարձնում. ավելորդ քաշ ունեցող մարդիկ ավելի լավ են տանում միջմաշկային կորոնար միջամտությունը, որն արվում է սրտի իշեմիկ հիվանդության դեպքում, քան նիհարները: Գիտնականները սա «ճարպակալման պարադոքս» են կոչում:
Լենոքս Հիլ հիվանդանոցի աշխատակիցները վերլուծել են սրտի կատետերիզացում տարած 1.035.727 մարդկանց տվյալները: Հետազոտողներն ուսումնասիրել են, թե մարմնի զանգվածի ինդեքսն (ՄԶԻ) ինչպես է ազդում մահացության, խնամքի արժողության, մեկ ամսվա ընթացքում հիվանդանոցում գտնվելու տեւողության եւ երկրորդ անգամ այնտեղ հայտնվելու հավանականության վրա:
Հիվանդների 42%-ը միջմաշկային կորոնար միջամտության է ենթարկվել: Մասնագետները հայտնաբերել են, որ անբավարար քաշով մարդիկ ավելի հազվադեպ են սրտի կատետերիզացիայի կամ միջմաշկային կորոնար միջամտության ենթարկվել՝ ի տարբերություն նրանց, ովքեր նորմալ կամ նույնիսկ բարձր ՄԶԻ են ունեցել:
Սակայն, միաժամանակ, անբավարար քաշով հիվանդները երեք անգամ ավելի հաճախ են մահացել սրտի կատետերիզացիայից հետո, քան ճարպակալմամբ հիվանդները: Ընդհանուր առմամբ, նիհար մարդիկ ճարպակալում ունեցող հիվանդներից հինգ անգամ ավելի հաճախ են մահացել: Ավելին, մեծ ՄԶԻ ունեցող մարդիկ ավելի հազվադեպ են մահացել, քան փորձի մասնակից նորմալ քաշով կամավորները:
Անբավարար քաշով հիվանդները հիվանդանոցում միջինը մնացել են 10.5 օր, իսկ նորմալ քաշով հիվանդները՝ ընդամենը 5.1 օր: 30 օրվա ընթացքում նորից հիվանդանոցում հայտնվելու վտանգն անբավարար քաշով հիվանդների պարագայում 18%-ով բարձր է եղել, ճարպակալմամբ տառապող հիվանդների դեպքում՝ 8.2%-ով ցածր:
