Անցյալում եւ ընթացիկ դարում ԱՄՆ-ի վարած տարբեր պատերազմներին մասնակցած ավելի քան 80 հազար ամերիկացի զինծառայողներ համարվում են անհայտ կորածներ: Այդ մասին The Washington Post թերթը հայտնել Է մայիսի 29-ին, երբ երկրում նշվում Էր ազգային տոնը՝ Հիշատակման օրը:
Անհայտ կորածների ցուցակում ընդգրկված են 50 նահանգների եւ չներառված տարածքների, այդ թվում՝ Ֆիլիպինների, բնակիչներ, որը մինչեւ 1946 թվականը ԱՄՆ-ի բաղկացուցիչ մասն Էր: Ավելի քան 10 հազար մարդ անհայտ կորել են հենց Ֆիլիպիններում, մոտավորապես 5,8 հազարը՝ Սողոմոնյան կղզիներում, ավելի քան 5 հազարը՝ Կորեական թերակղզում: Հազարավոր ամերիկացիներ անհայտ կորած են համարվում Խաղաղ օվկիանոսի հարավային մասում, Հյուսիսային Ատլանտիկայում եւ ամբողջ Արեւմտյան Եվրոպայում:
Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմին մասնակցած ամերիկացիներից մինչ այժմ անհայտ կորած Է համարվում հինգ մարդ, Երկրորդ համաշխարհայինում՝ 10 հազար, Վիետնամի պատերազմում՝ 2,7 հազար, Կորեայում՝ 8,1 հազար մարդ: Սառը պատերազմի հետ կապված հակամարտությունների հետեւանքով անհայտ կորել են ԱՄՆ-ի 147 հազար զինծառայողներ: Ամերիկացիները հիշատակման օրն առաջին անգամ նշել են 1868 թվականի մայիսի 30-ին՝ հարգանքի տուրք մատուցելով Հյուսիսի եւ Հարավի միջեւ քաղաքացիական պատերազմում զոհվածներին: Այն ժամանակ ծաղիկներով զարդարվել Էին 20 հազար զինվորների շիրիմներ, որոնք! հողին են հանձնվել Վաշինգտոնի մերձակա Առլինգթոնյան գերեզմանատանը:
19-րդ դարի վերջին այդ օրը նշվում Էր գործնականում արդեն ամբողջ երկրի տարածքում, իսկ Համաշխարհային առաջին պատերազմից հետո այդ օրն սկսեցին հիշել ԱՄՆ-ի մասնակցությամբ բոլոր զինված հակամարտություններում զոհվածներին: 1968 թվականին, Տոնական օրերի օրենքին համապատասխան, Հիշատակման օրը սկսեցին նշել մայիսի վերջին երկուշաբթի օրը, հաղորդել Է ՏԱՍՍ-ը:-0-/56/ 13.59 ամերիկացի զինծառայողներ, անհայտ կորածներ
