Դեռևս հին ժամանակներից նկարիչները ոգեշնչվել էին ռեալիզմով: Սակայն 1970-ականներին գեղանկարչության այդ ուղղությունը հասավ իր գագաթնակետին: Հայտնվեցին այնպիսի գեղարվեստական հոսանքներ, ինչպիսիք են հիպերռեալիզմն ու ֆոտոռեալիզմը:
Հարկ է նշել, որ այդ գեղարվեստական ուղղությունները մինչ օրս լայն տարածում ունեն:
Երբեմն ռեալիստների նոր ալիքի նկարները դժվար է զանազանել լուսանկարներից:
Այն ժամանակ, երբ ֆոտոռեալիզմը շեշտը դնում է իրականության համապատասխանության վրա, հիպերռեալիզմը կենտրոնում դնում է էմոցիաները:
